4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
[2003 bottleling - sampled December 2004] A deep red beer with a huge brown head. The aroma is quite sweet with notes of prunes, raisins, and burnt caramel. The flavor is sweet, very roasted, with notes of caramel, prunes, chocolate as well as hints of yeast. The end is very dry roasted almost like pibe tobacco.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
(My label says clearly: brewed and bottled by 3 Horne, Kaatsheuvel for St. Servattumus).
Dark ruby-brown; brownish slim but creamy head. Rich nose: preserved fruits, dipped in caramel, poured over with a good brandy-based liqueur. Roasted, even burnt malts and caramel... on the verge of really bitter. After the shock has gone, a new flavour comes up, as from goat cheese or blue cheese. Palate has more bitterness, but this is hoppy too. Warming up, tobacco notes. Full-bodied, warming. I'm flabbergasted. Is this the same beer as the other raters had? I just love it. Young and 3 Horne, recipe from Sint-Servattumus, I must be dreaming - short of miracle.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
(Bottled & Brewed by De 3 Horne) Very dark reddish brown with a medium, foamy and tanned head. Very rye-puddingy, sweet-sourish, raisiny, caramely-malty aroma with dried fruit and hints of alcohol. Sourish-malty, quite sweet, rye-puddingy flavor with even less complexity than in the aroma. Dry and bitter black coffee in the aftertaste. Medium to full-bodied, sticky-syrupy and somewhat ashy palate with a bit foamy carbonation. A simple, straightforward and syrupy dubbel with some alcohol present. A good start, and reasonably enjoyable as such, but needs some product development - either towards a smooth Val-Dieu Winter -like treat, or even drier and more bitter strong porter.
