McNeillR (1221) - SCOTLAND - SEP 12, 2014
Tarry flat darkest brown with a sticky brown bath tub draining tannin. Nose is a burny, earthy and a spiciness driven by the barrel that is almost chilli-like. Syrupy thick yet peppered with the earnest coffee bitterness that breaks things up and keeps things nicely busy on the palate. Finish is cleanly boozy, the barrel maybe drying things out rather than overpowering it.

Bottle. Black with thin tan head. Strong coffee aroma, some licorice and ash, chocolate and vanilla. Taste of molasses, muscovado, coffee, vanilla. Thick and sweet, just like me.

This is a dark beer that is so good, its strong but you don’t taste its strength, you get a coffee backbone the more you drink it but its not overpowering, its got good body but is not sickly or syrupy like the tickle monster, it has some port tastes to it, rice fruit with some spice reminiscent of christmas pudding and mince pies, slight marmite taste at the end, I wished I had some stilton and could drink it at christmas with my pudding coz i think it would go brilliantly. Like the tsarina esra in complexity of tastes and flavours. bottle at bottle shop thanks drew!

Bottle from Beer Central, Sheffield. Nearly black. No head. Liquorice. Espresso. Tobacco leaf. Some meaty leather thing going on. Boozy woodiness, too. Taste is heavy sweet. Roast dry. Light bitter. Palate is thick, silky, and unctuous. Very little carbonation, which for me, in a beer this big, is detrimental. Finish is fruity dry, and long, coffee bitter. Not entirely cohesive. Still knocks your knackers off, though.

500ml bottle. Pours jet black with a thin head. Aroma is soft bourbon, woody chocolate and liquorice. Taste has woody coffee and bourbon to start. Heavy sweet bourbon and chocolate finish. No real sense of the strength. Oily and full in the mouth.

Benzai (8234) - Oirschot, THE NETHERLANDS, NETHERLANDS - AUG 17, 2014
Bottle kindly shared by Oli & Mia. Opaque pitch black color, medium sized dark brown head. Aroma is rich, heavy, superb: malts, loads of roasted malts, loads of coffee, loads of bourbon, dark chocolate. Intense and hugely impressive! Taste malts, again loads of roasted malts, bourbon and coffee. Wow, rich and full. Full body, oily texture, perfect soft and suitable carbonation. Absolutely lovely.

Keg at Evil Twin tap takeover, CBCEC1. Thick and viscose black, but no visible head, you can smell this from across the table - deep espresso, freshly roasted beans and melted chocolate. Flavour is sweet coffee syrup, long deep espresso, milk chocolate, condensed milk, vanilla beans, fudge... one sip lasts a long time in the mouth. Completely over the top coffee but exactly my sort of thing - one of my favourite beers of the year so far
