3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Murky brown color. Frustrating experience to peel the wax off (in tiny pieces)
Aroma: typical barrel-aged aroma’s, caramel, dried fruit, oak, some vanilla:
Taste: as you’d expect from a barrel-aged barley wine: pretty sweet, a bit of oak and a sour touch in the finish. A bit wine-y.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Courtesy of Kraddel. Thanks. Good sample from a 375 ml. bottle. Dark reddish brown, little mocha bubbles. Nose is oxidation, big sherry, herbal, oak, rotting wood vinous,… Taste is oxidized, big sherry, old rotting wine oak, light whisky, herbal, glue, brown sugar, bit muted by oxidation, odd vinous quality,… Oxidation evident in its body. Not sure if age worked in tis benefit. Good & interesting but not outspoken enough. Lovely packaging but the wax was very flimsy and cheap.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours clear, dark caramel coloured. good white head. Smell is rather sharp for a BW. Oak, wine ( ? ) aspects. Taste is bit sweet, barley-wine maltyness. Some wine-tannines as well as some wood. OK, bit less than expected but good nevertheless

27/I/15 - 37.5cl bottle @ home - BB: n/a, 2013 vintage (2015-119) Thanks to JefVerstraete for sharing the bottle!
Clear red to amber beer, creamy irregular beige head, stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: fruity, bit oxidized, orange peel, sweet, caramel, raisins, dried fruit, vanilla, some alcohol. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: pretty sourish, bit chemical, fruity, band-aid, bitter, grapefruit, peaches, green apples, alcohol. Aftertaste: medicinal, very hoppy, sourish, bitter, alcohol, resinous touch. Not really impressed, tbh.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Brewtique, Macclesfield. Hazy, reddy amber. Film of off white head. Fruity, boozy cake mix aroma. Some woody orange hop, too. Bit peachy. Fairly vibrant, for the style. Taste is fruity dry. Quite harsh, woody bitter. Palate is oily, and chewy. Lots of boozy warmth. Finishes fruity bitter. Slightly metallic. Not as smooth or full as I expected. All a bit woody, and dry, for me.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle purchased at the Brew Dog Bottle Dog shop in London. A fine mixture of classic Euro Barley wine with some weightier and pretty unique elements. Lovely chestnut brown colour with a slash of orange, with a fluffy light tan head. The nose has a rich malt underlying dark berries, toffee and something a bit astringent and lightly medicinal. This is a full bodied BW. The nose elements carry through into the taste, supplemented by slightly sour cherries, touches of chocolate and coffee, banana, and a hint of both sourness and light bitterness. As you work your way through the bottle, the dark berries push their way forward more and more, and a slight alcohol warmth complete a very complex and enjoyable sipper.

1.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 2/20
Bottle for De Bierkoning. This is a drain pour. Tastes of metal and batteries. Some bandaids and bile. Supremely disappointing since I paid ~$25 for this and brought it back to the states to share with friends. Must be a bad bottle given the other ratings.

4.2 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle from brewdog bar, Sheffield. murky Maroon with not much head. Aroma is complex, natural prune and plum you always get with barley wine, but with woody okey flavours and some zesty spicy notes too. Taste is sweet and sour, with spicy bitterness and alcohol warmth. Quite prickly and a medium body with oil. Really like this one.
