Dark clear copper. Darker than whale. Nice well balanced beer. Pretty good unless its side by side with buffalo killer.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: NOV 2, 2012 Tasted at the 1st annual Urban Chestnut - Wolpertinger beer festival in St. Louis, MO, USA from tap into beer boot sampler. Poured a mostly clear orange-amber color with some chill haze and weak off-white foam. I love their regular Whale, it’s one of my all-time favorite wheat beers. This is a pretty good beer too: lots of malt, lots of hops, lots of alcohol, lots of citrus tang, blah, blah, blah, but it just didn’t hit the spot for me. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but perhaps they did use too much of good things. Overall, I didn’t feel it was as uniquely balanced and delicious as its lower-gravity cousin.
UPDATE 11/1/2012: Tasted on tap at the brewpub, and it was MUCH better this time. They remembered the Wolpertinger batch and believed there might’ve been an infection issue with the serving system they were provided that day. Whatever the case, this time I picked up loads of biscuit, honey, resin, caramel, fruity yeast esters, nice perfumey and warming alcohol but no rough fusels. It had a nice bready mouthfeel, very persistent foam and lace. Lots tastier and more complex than before.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft at the brewpub on the 2nd anniversary weekend, served in a snifter. Pours a flat-looking orange-gold with virtually no visible carbonation or head. The aroma starts sweet, with sweet malts, apricot, and tangerine, followed by some big boozy notes and wheat. The flavor is more smooth throughout, with notes of tropical fruits, wheat, faint citrus, sticky sweet malts, and booze. The waiter wasn’t sure of the ABV on this but it had to be double digits. Medium-full bodied, with almost no carbonation and a chewy, boozy mouthfeel. A beast. Kind of reminded me of the Triple Red they did a while back.
