3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours pretty much black with just a hint of dark brown and ruby red towards the bottom of the glass. Finger length off-white head that dissipates slowly and leaves a thick lacing around the edges. Smells of mostly coffee beans, as well as some vanilla/carmel, bakers chocolate, and some roasted malt. Taste starts with intense, roasted coffee beans. Much stronger taste than the aroma suggests. Almost imparts an earthy flavor from the coffee beans. Then smooths out in the middle. Get some vanilla or carmel that acts like a coffee creamer and lightens the intensity of the coffee. Then the finish brings back some intense coffee flavors, in addition to some carmel, some bittersweet chocolate, as well as some bitterness from the fairly heavy hop presence. Sweetness increases as the flavor profile moves on. Pretty full body with a creamy and slick mouthfeel. Lively carbonation that reminds you that this is an imperial porter, not an imperial stout, and makes the beer much more refreshing for a full-bodied beer. No alcohol detected in the smell or taste. Good stuff.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Can: Dark brown, nearly back once it’s in the glass. Looks thin. Light beige head, thick & foamy on top. Aroma is coffee heavy. More sweet & creamy, not super-roasted or bitter. Dense, lots of oily beans with an undertone of alcohol pungency. Thin in the feel, like it was in the appearance. Coffee sweetness up front; dense & highly concentrated. Small undertones of char, roasted malt, burnt nuts, & some cocoa. Finishes & lingers with semisweet coffee beans. Some noticeable alcohol as it warms. Pretty nice, a little thin & one-track minded, but not bad.

Can pours cola brown with a big beige head. Aroma of coffee and sweet malt. Taste is more coffee but with a big bitter coffee finish. Decent but kind of one-dimensional.

Pour out of can, thanks Scott! Dark brownish black pour with tan head, aroma brought notes of espresso, green coffee, chocolate notes into a bit of spice, slight earth with a touch of roasted malt. Taste was a mix of big coffee, espresso, hints of green coffee into some earth, some chocolate, touch of roast, finishing slightly roasted.

Poured out of a can. Dark rich color with light foamy head. I don't taste the alcohol. Taste is a smooth, lingering coffee and vanilla. Nice light creamy lingering coffee, with a hint of vanilla. Hard to believe there's 300 calories in here, but it's worth it!

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
THOUGHTS: Had one a couple weeks before I tried this one one and it seemed to improve in those few weeks of aging. Hid alcohol fairly well.
TECHNICAL: Drank 3/23/2013. Can. Poured a clear, dark brown that was nearly black in the glass with bright red highlights and an average, tan head that mostly diminished and left excellent lacing. The aroma was great but a little weak and contained heavy roasted malt, chocolate and coffee; moderate caramel; and slight fruit notes. The initial flavor was slightly sweet, lightly bitter and ever so slightly sour; while the finish was lightly sweet, and light to moderately bitter with a fairly long duration. There was coffee, dark chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, sweetened coffee, chocolate syrup, and hints of fruit; but coffee is the dominant flavors. The medium to full body was oily with fizzy carbonation and an ever so slightly metallic finish.

Poured from can into a snifter glass
Appearance –Pours a deep-deep brown color with a small one finger tan colored head. When held up to the light hints of ruby red can be seen shinning through the brew. The head of the beer fades quite fast leaving a small film on the surface and only a very light level of lacing on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is strongest of a roasted malt and coffee smell. Mixed with these smells are some lighter notes of a toffee sweetness as well as a bit of cocoa and an earthy hop.
Taste –The taste begins with strong roasted malt, cocoa and some coffee flavors. There is a light sweetness of a caramel and vanilla flavor in the beginning of the taste. The sweeter flavors begin to fade more as the taste advances however with some flavors of oak and some light nutty flavors taking their place. Toward the end, the coffee flavor intensifies and is joined by some hop flavors of an earthy variety as was detected in the nose. These flavors, with the lessening of the sweet, end up leaving a roasted and bitter flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – For a 10 % abv brew the body of the beer was rather thin in terms of its thickness and chewiness while the carbonation level was a tad on the higher side. Neither the thin body of the beer or the higher carbonation level suited the flavors or the style of the brew well.
Overall – Not likely one I would go too again. A little too bitter and astringent at the end with the taste and the feel a bit off for me. OK, but for the cost not really worth it.

Can from my secret summer santa 2014. Pours very dark brown with a big creamy tanned head. Aroma of dark bitter chocolate, ripe fruits. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Taste is rich roasted, malts and coffee, with a pleasant sweet note as well from the chocolate, lingering bitter dark chocolate. Well hidden alcohol.
