Sixpoint Bengali Tiger is reminiscent of the century-old English IPA. In my perspective, many current IPAs suffer from lacking substance; unbalanced by a hoppy assertiveness that is not substantiated by a strong foundation of rich malt flavors. Our interpretation uses the highest-quality, floor-malted base malt, which lends a full-bodied and rich caramel flavor. We mash at high temperatures and add generous amounts of specialty malts to further emphasize a strong foundation of malt as leverage for our generous additions of hops… Which are indeed generous. We use a total of three different hop strains, and add a total of six different additions throughout the process. The Bengali Tiger has a hoppy snap upfront, but strides at a steady pace, and finishes balanced. The signature characteristic of the Tiger is the aroma… we use massive quantities of whole East Kent Goldings hops to dry hop in our conditioning tanks. The result? The essential oils from the hops are an enticing treat before every sip. Notice the lacing of stripes around the pint glass as you finish your glass; it’s the mark of the Tiger.

Copper color with a thin head. Floral and caramelly aroma. Some dank and spice notes too. Moderate bitterness. Slightly vegetal and dank flavor. Solid malt character, a bit like dry caramel and bread crust.

Sample at Örebro Öl & Whisky 2015. Hoppy smell with pine and a malty aroma that reminds me of sponge cake. Sweet and hoppy taste. High carbonation. Nice malt base with a nice piney hop aroma.

Can from Drinks of the World. A strong and powerful IPA, yet not ultimately refined. Quite fresh and grass-hoppy though.

Aroma is fruity and grassy as expected, juicy hops and quite a lot of malty backbone shine through. Taste is fruity and with a more classic hop-profile. Sweet oranges, a little earthy and a pretty solid malt body, in the end there ’s a lingering pine bitterness. Very well executed IPA with some more weight towards the classic feel but still being modern.

DATE TASTED: October 25, 2015 ... GLASSWARE: Brew at the Zoo pint... OCCASION: A busy weekend concludes with a beer much suggested in my beer circles... APPEARANCE: thick, frothing white head rolls out the can with vibrancy, despite my average pour; the head holds steady, displaying sponge-like spacing; the body is clear, copper-amber in color and understated in it effervescence... AROMA: beautifully clean spruce scent to start; grapefruit and floral overtones also demand attention... PALATE: smooth, medium-bodied, lively enough to encourage sips in bunches; finish is pleasant, light, and sustained... TASTE: grapefruit and spruce, as the nose suggests; the caramel rounds almost to an ESB quality, before dovetailing back to the hoppiness befitting an IPA... this manages to be an understated, respectful IPA... OVERALL: a Beer Advocate thread lead me to this, and although the beer does not develop the tiger stripes it aspires to-at least in my glass--it fulfills the flavor pedigree others have suggested; the caramel really distinguishes the Bengali from other IPAs...
