Sixpoint Bengali Tiger is reminiscent of the century-old English IPA. In my perspective, many current IPAs suffer from lacking substance; unbalanced by a hoppy assertiveness that is not substantiated by a strong foundation of rich malt flavors. Our interpretation uses the highest-quality, floor-malted base malt, which lends a full-bodied and rich caramel flavor. We mash at high temperatures and add generous amounts of specialty malts to further emphasize a strong foundation of malt as leverage for our generous additions of hops… Which are indeed generous. We use a total of three different hop strains, and add a total of six different additions throughout the process. The Bengali Tiger has a hoppy snap upfront, but strides at a steady pace, and finishes balanced. The signature characteristic of the Tiger is the aroma… we use massive quantities of whole East Kent Goldings hops to dry hop in our conditioning tanks. The result? The essential oils from the hops are an enticing treat before every sip. Notice the lacing of stripes around the pint glass as you finish your glass; it’s the mark of the Tiger.

A great IPA by any standards - and when I say "standards," I mean the the expectations of both east and west coast hop heads - this one has the hop kick in the mouth that most folks from the west side expect, but it has the chewy, bready malt backbone that most east coast IPAs seem to offer more of - I had this on draught at the brewery, and I must say that I’ve never seen so many floaties in a draught beer before - I think this contributed a great deal to the excellent, balancing malt character, adding just a touch of fruity esters on top of the bread and caramel flavors - very nice.

Can at the Moon Under Water (JDW), Watford on 10 March 2014. Poured a hazy, dark gold with a large, off-white head and excellent lacing. Nice citrus hop aroma with notes of honey and caramel. Initial flavours of grapefruit, pine and biscuit malt. Finish was bitter resin, juicy tropical fruit and dry grain.

In a can. Toastier aroma than you’d expect in an IPA. Flavor is of bitterness backed by chewy, roasty toast. Not a lot of robust hops flavor, malts dominate.

355ml Can from Crystal Palace (Wetherspoons), Glasgow (£2.49):
Pine hops and strong tropical fruit notes with a lot of citrus and some clean, sweet malts that hints at some caramel. Touches of grapefruit with pine notes seeming to dominate. Lighter on the nose than I was expecting but it is a nice one.
This one looks perfect; a bright amber to orange colour with a thumb-sized, foamy white head that holds great & leaves nice lacing too.
Pine hops and some grapefruit come through from the nose along with some citrus as well. Good lemon flavours and light malts as well to mix it up a little. Some orange towards the end as well.
Very bitter offering with a medium body and smooth body. Carbonation was quite lively and there was a dry and tangy feel to it with a lingering bitter aftertaste.

Hoppy and enjoyable with plenty of pine notes and flavours good bitterness too. You could tell the beer was a strong one but it still went down fairly easy, so much so that I went back to the bar for a second can. I can’t wait to try more from Sixpoint now.

Bue à la pression. Couleur ambrée orangée trouble. Arômes de fruits (orange) au nez. En bouche, corpulente et équilibrée à souhait. Finale sur l’amertume. Plutôt cool !

Poured a hazy orange/amber with a satisfyingly dense head. Aroma of sweet citrus and bitter hops. Medium body, flavour is medium sweet with an increasing residual bitterness. Nothing too complicated, but very well done.
