Pacific Standard, Brooklyn tap ($7): Pours black with a brownish head. Aroma is espresso and roasted malts. Taste is like a warm cup of coffee that is actually a cold cup of coffee. Basically, there is a lot of coffee, but it is admirably well blended into the roasted malt character of the beer. There are also hints of chocolate. Basically, this is a pretty dank porter. Sixpoint does not disappoint.

On tap at the City Tap House. Dark brown with a foamy beige head. Nose is chocolate and molasses; a little earthy. Medium body with a tang. Taste is chocolate, grass, some citrus peel and tobacco with a coffee finish.

Aroma of roast coffee. Pours black with light brown film. Taste is just heavy coffee. Not much else to it.

In short: A highly roasted stout/porter with complete focus on roasted coffee beans
How: Tap at Three Penny Taproom, Montpelier, VT
The look: Black body topped by a medium tan head
In long: Nose has a lot of roasted coffee beans and then some more. Taste is very roasted, so roasted that it is a bit harsh. Roasted coffee beans and then burnt coffee beans. Not much chocolate flavor and nothing fruity here. The roastiness might be a big over the top here and it makes it a bit too astringent. This is a coffee stout that is really just that, a coffee stout. Certainly far from complex, very straightforward, but still enjoyable because coffee focused beers are easy to enjoy. The roastiness and coffee in this beer stood out like two black guys in a NASCAR race stadium.

Some great imperial stouts and porters happen to have a coffee bitterness and/or flavor as a result of the way their malts are roasted and brewed. But Sixpoint Gorilla Warfare Porter is all about the coffee - or more specifically - espresso, as one pint of this beer is roughly equivalent to two shots of the specialized coffee beverage. And I can see why, as thereís never a moment where coffee isnít prevalent in the palate.
I got a 16oz growler fill at my local beer store. I poured it into a tulip glass.
Appearance: Opaque black body with a frothy, tan head which laces and retains very well.
Smell: Strong coffee aroma, closer to an actual coffee beverage than a beer.
Taste: It begins with a sharp, dry coffee bitterness. Thereís also an underlying sweetness and taste similar to a cola (odd). It then transitions quickly to genuine coffee flavor, especially that of sweetened iced coffee with lots of cream and sugar. The finish reverts back to the beginning with more coffee bitterness and leaves a slight aftertaste akin to drinking regular coffee, although it is quite clean considering how robust the palate is.
This is certainly a delectable, pleasant taste, at least for me because I like coffee and I like these types of beers. The only problem is itís a little repetitive. Pretty much all you taste is coffee. Those looking for the genuine porter components may be a little disappointed. There is a brief taste of roasted malts on the finish, which is nice, but a little more of this wouldíve been great. Still, I can only count on one hand the number of beers that are as coffee-forward as this one - thatís quite an elite club for this beer.
Drinkability: Since this is a porter itís not surprising the mouthfeel is a little thin and the carbonation is on the lower side. While it does go down smooth, Sixpoint Gorilla Warfare Porter is not exactly a chuggable beer because itís so energetic and bursting with coffee flavor and bitterness. I found myself drinking this in smaller sips than usual. Its weight at 7.2% ABV seems about right as thereís definitely a lot of chutzpah to this palate, but itís thinner body and relatively clean aftertaste is what you expect from a strong porter rather than a motor oil-like imperial stout. A great beer to have after dinner instead of hot gourmet coffee.

Growler shared at a recent BA/RB tasting... Poured near black with a thin, off-white head. This was awesome and one of my favorites of the tasting. Incredible, pressed coffee flavor. Really rich with coffee, a hint of acid, roast, charred grains. Straight forward, to the point, making the coffee shine while acting harmoniously with the Porter base.

Sampled at Rattle N Hum. Too much tart fruit, potentially infected...lactic qualities accompany bitter chocolate and toffee. Cherry skin, plum, and raspberries are there as well. Distracting. Pass.

Tap at Khyber Pass in Philly. Pours deep black with a lighter beige head. Nice retention. Nose is spicy chili salsa and green peppers. Has that vegetal DMS character from the coffee adjunct unfortunately. A big pet peeve of mine. Taste is light bodied, chalky, powdery, chili salsa, green peppers. Salsa bowl. Not good.

Black with a beige head. Aroma is coffee, roasty, a tad stale, earthy. Flavor packs a bitter coffee wallop. Roasted malts, burnt coffee, light smoke, earth. Good. Strong bitterness from the coffee.
