COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
For it we finagled 200 pounds of fresh cranberries from a friendly bog in Massachusetts, right at the heart of its harvest season. (Like hops, cranberries have only one harvest per year.) So sour, they’re usually heavily sweetened or combined with other fruits for consumption, but we’ve kept them in their natural state to add both tartness and bitterness to the final beer. No added sugar, and all the Vitamin C. The rest of the recipe for this porter includes English roasted, black and crystal malts and some Columbus and Centennial hops. Only after the beer had fully fermented, the smashed cranberry elixir was poured in.

UPDATED: MAR 18, 2013 On draft at Nosh for brewers showcase... Pours a muddy opaque brown with a two finger tan head. Soft aromas of chocolate, fresh hops and the slight hint of fruity esters. On the palate it balances out nicely with rich chocolate, earthy malts that fall into a slightly bitter hoppy fruit finish... definitely wouldn’t detect cranberries per say but I definitely taste some dark sour fruit coming through in underneath the rounded malts.

Draught at TJ’s: Aroma of malt, roast, chocolate-covered cherries, and a hint of cranberry. Poured very dark brown/ruby/very deep orange in color with a medium-sized, creamy, dense, tan/brown head that diminished but lasted throughout. Clear. Sparkling. Flavor is lightly sweet and lightly bitter. Tastes of malt, roasting, slight coffee, and a hint of lactose. Medium body. Average texture. Average carbonation. Malt, roast, slight coffee finish is lightly bitter. No cranberry in the flavor. 7.8%ABV is completely hidden throughout.

On tap at Rustico in Alexandria. Served in a goblet. Pours near black with a short off white head and just a bit of lacing. Thin collar throughout. The nose carries a fair amount of roast along with a touch of ash and chocolate. Somee slight cranberry character in the background as well. The flavor has a bit more cranberry and just a bit of fruity tartness in the background. The base roast lapt carries the day. Medium body with good fruit and just a bit of tartness. Nice carbonation and a semi-dry finish. Pretty good.
