COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Signal IPA is a hybrid formulation that combines smoky malt and aromatic hops. And now the Mad Scientists have struck again – taking it to the next level with bourbon barrel-aging and batch-blending. In the original Signal, the savory, bacony, smoky notes combine with juicy hops to create wholly unique flavor combination. For the barrel-aged version, we scaled the recipe up to 8.2% ABV and aged it for four months in JD Willet Bourbon barrels. Smoke, wood, hops and bourbon come together with a creamy, full texture that gives to a dry finish.

Associated Supermarket, Bushwick, NY growler station ($9.69): Pours copper with a white head. Aroma is floral, smoky, with a hint of citrus. Taste is a combination of smoke and a moderate level of hops. The smokiness is done right, as it is neither too light or too heavy. This is somewhat sweet. "tis very drinkable and I jsut like smoke as a whole.

Enjoyed while waiting in line at Fette Sau in Brooklyn. The beer appears a hazy, copper orange color. The aroma offers smoke and hops - an odd marriage, even done well. An IPA with a bit of smoke in the finish. A creative endeavor, but perhaps an overwhelming task. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

draft at Dash In (Feb 18, 2012) - This beer should probably be listed as a smoked beer style. Anyway, it pours a hazy, honey color and has a good smoky aroma. The flavor is really dominated by the smoke, almost German rauchbier like, with a sweet malt background and a little hops bitterness. It’s medium bodied and has a dry, lingering smoky finish.

Tap from barcade. Poured gold, mild head, nice classic rauch aroma, pretty light mouthfeel/drinkable, some hops. Enjoyable.

UPDATED: JUN 9, 2012 A: Hazy orange-amber body. Moderate sized white head, faint skim left on the glass. S: Yup, there is some smoke here... but not as much as I was expecting. Lemon-citric and grassy hops over top a soft malty body. T: The smoke is a bit more amped up, but not so much so that it drowns out the hops. Nice lemon-grassy hops. M: Medium bodied, appropriately carbonated, mild bitterness, a blt slick in the finish. O: I was pleasantly surprised by the balance between the smoke and hops that actually worked decently well.

An amber ale with a thin white head. In aroma, a nice biscuit malt with light floral hops, nice and smooth. In mouth, a nice malt with floral peppery hops, quite nice. On tap at Fette Sau, Dec. 30 2011.

Clear orange-yellow pour with an aroma of citrus, floral, and smoke. Unique flavor with citrus, pine, floral elements, and a smoke backbone. Very nice beer.

Draught at Whole Foods Devon: Aroma of malt, hops, diacetyl, and some grass. Poured amber in color with a tiny white head that diminished but lasted throughout. Hazy. Not sparkling. Flavor is light to medium sweet and slightly bitter. Tastes of malt, wood, slight smoke, slight hops, and a hint of caramel. Medium body. Average texture. Average carbonation. Malt, caramel, hop, light wood, slight smoke finish is lightly dry.

Sampled at Pinocchio’s. Light murky color, dirty blond. Funky smoked aroma. The flavor is lightly smokey, almost like a charred biscuit with mild resinous notes. All around sort of bland and while the smokiness want a huge detractor, it didn’t do much for me either.
