Dark black beer with a thick light brown, lingering head. Very rich sweet creamy rich chocolate aroma, some licorice and a bit of cocoa. Soft roasty quality with a shot of salty smokiness throughout. Earthy chewy soft finish. Rich and chewy sweet, but not at all cloying. The soft roast and smoke serve as a counterpoint to the cocoaish maltiness. Full-bodied with a bit of peppery alcohol on the back. beastiefan2k (1597), Lawrence (formely NYC), Kansas, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Feb 13, 2008 12oz bottle from the super cooler brewer/owner, Shane. As far as I understand it’s a homebrewering like hand bottle. It pours a completely black body with a lightly tan colored head, which is pretty strong. The head never really goes away and leaves a strong lacing. Aroma is strong as well with maltiness that is slick and oily. Then comes some stinging alcohol with light meat smoke. It’s light smoke with thick malt and touches of alcohol, its cool. Taste is again strong with alcohol, prunes and smoke. It finishes with a toffee candy. The body is a bit light for all the strong flavors and the alcohol touches and it tickles the tongue. In general the alcohol is too much but the other characteristics make up for it. hopdog (5552), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA

Blacked hued porter having a long lasting off-white head and good lacing. No discernable carbonation. Fresh sweet smelling malt aroma. Medium bodied that starts with creamy sweet malt roastiness, toffee, and coffee and finishes with lingering bitterness. Well-balanced malt and hops. An excellent delicious porter. | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Nov 10, 2005 Draught pint at Sunset Grill, 11/2/2005. Dark brown, with some black colors swirling around and just a hint of deep ruby on the edges. Borderline transluscent, with a small tan-beige head atop that has fair retention without any lacing. Aroma does not show any smoke, but more a black chocolate and coffee roast, with some vanilla cream and medium-dry caramel. Lightly green, fresh fruity and mildly bitter hops are noticeable as well. Flavor begins with smoke, however and is well integrated with a lightly sweet chocolate-espresso note. The smoke is very light, relative to other smoked beers, but brings images of charred wood, turkey bacon and charred burgers, though maybe charred isnt the right word, as it’s not bitter and astringent, just not very juicy and oily/fatty tasting. Chocolate and caramel build on the palate and by the end of the glass, the smoke is not very apparent. Light roast throughout, with hops that are more bitter than flavorful. Didnt get as much complexity as was hoping for, nor was the body exactly full. Lively mouthfeel, moderate carbonation and no alcohol apparency.
