Commercial Description:
SMP is a Smoked Baltic Porter.
Sixpoint SMP is unique creation from a place like no other in the world - Brooklyn. In our neighborhood, a classic industrial sector, we are constantly reminded of the manufacturing and industry that made Brooklyn famous. I wanted to make a unique beer that combined all of the unique traditions of my favorite beer style... Porter. Like the Baltic countries of Europe, our company resides close to the ocean. And like the industrial revolution in England, Brooklyn is home to the industry of the world’s capital. It was only fitting, therefore, for me to create a unique beer altogether, the Smoked Baltic Porter. Our Smoked Baltic Porter is our most complex beer. The aroma is entirely unique, mostly due to our generous addition of dry hops in the conditioning tank. Beneath the aroma of hops is the flavor of toffee, chocolate, and a slight sharpness from the patent malt. For the discerning enthusiast, note the subtle smoky notes beneath it all... The beer is full-bodied and chewy, hoppy throughout, and finishes with a slight burnt nuttiness from the dark malts. Despite its robust complexity, the beer is very drinkable for its size and strength.

Slightly muddy dark brown colour. Smoky aroma with a light roast accent. Thick with malty notes - some oatmeal, bit of smoke, toffee. Lightish body, but clean and balanced. I like the way the smoke is strong, but still complementary rather than dominant.

Sample courtesy of weeare138 (12oz hand bottled from the brewer). Poured a deep brown color with a very small sized tan head. Aromas of milk chocolate, lactose, roast, light smoke, and dark fruits. Tastes of milk chocolate, smoke, lighter dark fruits, and some roast.

Thanks to Eugene for sharing and to Shane for giving the bottle to Eugene to share with me. Dark black beer with a thick light brown, lingering head. Very rich sweet creamy rich chocolate aroma, some licorice and a bit of cocoa. Soft roasty quality with a shot of salty smokiness throughout. Earthy chewy soft finish. Rich and chewy sweet, but not at all cloying. The soft roast and smoke serve as a counterpoint to the cocoaish maltiness. Full-bodied with a bit of peppery alcohol on the back.

Draught pint at Sunset Grill, 11/2/2005. Dark brown, with some black colors swirling around and just a hint of deep ruby on the edges. Borderline transluscent, with a small tan-beige head atop that has fair retention without any lacing. Aroma does not show any smoke, but more a black chocolate and coffee roast, with some vanilla cream and medium-dry caramel. Lightly green, fresh fruity and mildly bitter hops are noticeable as well. Flavor begins with smoke, however and is well integrated with a lightly sweet chocolate-espresso note. The smoke is very light, relative to other smoked beers, but brings images of charred wood, turkey bacon and charred burgers, though maybe charred isnt the right word, as it’s not bitter and astringent, just not very juicy and oily/fatty tasting. Chocolate and caramel build on the palate and by the end of the glass, the smoke is not very apparent. Light roast throughout, with hops that are more bitter than flavorful. Didnt get as much complexity as was hoping for, nor was the body exactly full. Lively mouthfeel, moderate carbonation and no alcohol apparency.

Black coffee in color, hues of burnt caramel, moderate beige head, spotty lacing.   Burnt malt aroma, but not much else.   Malty start, roasty, quickly dies down with a touch of ashtray.   The smoke portion of thise beer is too subtle to take into account, especially for this style.   Moderate body and mouthfeel.  Light roasty finish, but again, the smoked aspect is so subtle that it is easily masked behind the roasted malt aspect of this beer.   Kick up the smoke and the body, and then we’re talken!   Also didn’t seem very Baltic like to me.   Good start, but needs some tweaken.

This is my favorite one out the four sixpoint products I’ve tried - cloudy and nearly black - frothy, capuccino-like head - aroma is nutty, with notes of plum, brown sugar - barely any smoke in the aroma or flavor, but that’s alright ’cause this sucker is tasty - robust, chewy chocolate and caramel malts - just a slight roastiness, but nothing I would call smokey - gimme some more!

Pitchy opaque. Big dark brown head. Chocolate cake dough aroma. Like a black forest cake in a glass. Chocolate, walnuts, cherry. Dry esters and some banana peel. Super. If you’re looking for off-the-beaten-path beers, make sure you track down a Sixpoint.
