The Sixpoint Spice of Life series is a celebration of one of the most popular but obscure plants on the planet - the hop. In this series, we release a new iteration of the same recipe every month- a total of 12 iterations per year. The recipe is for a straightforward American style IPA- brewed with only two different malts, a single hop varietal, and is fermented dry to accentuate hop flavor and aroma. We brew the exact same recipe every time with one interesting catch- each time we switch the hop strain. This method of adjusting one variable is called a "controlled experiment." But more important, it allows you to appreciate exactly how a different strain of hops can influence the flavor and aroma of beer!

BLADT (587) - Brooklyn, New York, USA - AUG 8, 2014
Tap. Cloudy orange amber. Thin head. Basic nose that delivers fruity hops and musky grain. Taste is similarly narrow in focus. Light and semi dry. Muted hops. Seems unfinished.

Draft at WHole Foods Plymouth. Poured deep copper with off-white head. Nose was caramel malt, hops, not a "poppy" aroma. Tastes of caramel malt, subdued hops, mild earthy and tannic finishing notes, and that Sixpoint house yeasty flavor as it warmed. OK, not up there with the best, however.

Serving: draft at Fireworks. Hazy light gold pour with a fluffy white head. Slightly floral and grassy nose. A touch of sweet grain and a nice grassy bitterness. Light to medium body. Dry finish. Solid stuff.

NikkTwist (1589) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - APR 14, 2012
Draft. Poured a cloudy white. Hoppy, but quite a lot of citrus. Woody. Notes of birch. White oak. Lemon pith. Moth balls. Crisp. Much better cold.

Dogbrick (7971) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - APR 12, 2012
On draught at 1808 American Bistro. The beer pours a hazy orange-gold color with a medium thin and foamy off-white head that diminishes slowly. Patchy lacing on the glass. Aroma of pure citrusy hops with a touch of malt in the background. Medium body with a flavor just like the smell. Lots of fresh citrus with a malt backbone. The finish is fruity with a lingering hops aftertaste. Above average showcase of Centennial hops overall.

Tmoney99 (10577) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - MAR 21, 2012
Draft. Poured cloudy amber color with an average frothy white head that lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy citrus hop aroma. Medium body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Moderate smooth bittersweet flavor with a moderate bitterswwet finish of medium duration. My expectations where met.

swoopjones (5725) - Buffalo, New York, USA - MAR 20, 2012
Draft at blue monk, buffalo. Golden orange pour with fluffy white head. Milder aroma of light peanut shells. Nice smooth bitterness, light peanut shells, mild citrus and tobacco. Easily the best of spice o life series so far (nugget and simcoe)

Spookgolds (241) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 24, 2012
On draft at iron abbey. Aroma of hops, some citrus. Taste is hoppy and citrusy, but not overpowering. This is good.

UPDATED: JUN 9, 2012 A: Pale amber body. Nice clarity. Moderate off-white head. Spotty lacing. S: Faint, and I do mean faint, grapefruit, pine and floral notes. T: The grapefruit and floral notes are present -- although they are not pungent despite the rather bland and muted malt backbone. M: You know some people homebrew IPAs that end up tasting like hop flavored carbonated water? Well, this beer has a bit of that going on. O: An interesting idea, but ultimately the base beer is insipid that the hop addition just doesn’t work here.

On tap at Pinocchio’s. Golden color, hazy, some head. I don’t know, I almost feel like I got the wrong beer. The hop character was a but resiny and didn’t have the familiar Centennial floralness. Bland and watery, too. Not that great.
