The Sixpoint Spice of Life series is a celebration of one of the most popular but obscure plants on the planet - the hop. In this series, we release a new iteration of the same recipe every month- a total of 12 iterations per year. The recipe is for a straightforward American style IPA- brewed with only two different malts, a single hop varietal, and is fermented dry to accentuate hop flavor and aroma. We brew the exact same recipe every time with one interesting catch- each time we switch the hop strain. This method of adjusting one variable is called a "controlled experiment." But more important, it allows you to appreciate exactly how a different strain of hops can influence the flavor and aroma of beer!

Sample at 1808 American Bistro. Hazy orange color with a medium foamy white head that dissipates gradually. Patchy lacing on the glass. Aroma of hops, citrus and malt. Medium-bodied with flavors of citrusy hops, pine and toasted malt. The finish is moderately bitter with a fruity hops aftertaste. Above average overall.

On tap at Sugar Maple. Pours a hazy gold with a near white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of earthy grapefruit, citrus and light pine with an earthy grain backbone. Flavor starts with earthy citrus/grapefruit with some backing earthy sweet grains and a bit of resin.

Draft at Craft. Pours turbid dark straw with 1-finger clingy off-white head. Nose is tangerine, juicy pineapple, honeydew, and black pepper. Tastes of big tropical fruit, tangerine, pineapple, black pepper, that rich complex citra finish, and an overall delicious beer.

In short: A fun fruity blond IPA. Good execution in simplicity
How: Tat at some white-trash bar in Tannersville NY (not listed on ratebeer) during their post-Tap-NY 2012 special Sixpoint event
The look: Cloudy golden-blond body topped by a persistent small off-white head
In long: Nose is tropical fruits butt this time without the cat urine that I oftern associate to Citra beers. Taste is clean full body with somewhat of a wheaty backbone sensation. Fun full body with a good carbonation. Hoppy is tropical fruits, grapefruits, maagoes and such… Everything is a bit toned down, this not a bouquet of hops or a bitterness bomb, this is a very quaffable brew. I liked it. Another pint of beer I had after a day of heavy drinking at the Tap-NY 2012 festival… just once I’d like to know what it’s like to go to a beer festival and not get totally drunk. But only just once though, all the other ones I want to get totally drunk .

On draft at 1808 in Columbus. Pours a hazy yellow-orange with a white head. Nose is amazing- great citra fruit, pineapple, mango, tropical fruit, papaya, and all manner of goodness. Flavor is light on those, but they are still prominent. A nice bit of caramel followed by some tropical fruit and some bitterness. Light to medium in body and a nice citra beer overall.

Draught at Whole Foods Devon: Aroma of Citra hops, lemon, grass, pine, lemon/lime, and a hint of caramel malt. Poured amber in color with a small to medium-sized, creamy, dense, rocky, off-white head that lasted throughout. Cloudy. Lightly sparkling. Full of small and medium-sized particles throughout. Very good lacing. Flavor is lightly sweet and medium bitter. Tastes of malt, hops, pine, Citra, resin, and grass. Medium body. Lightly dry texture. Average carbonation. Malt, citra, hop, grass, resin finish is dry.

Pours a hazy golden color with a medium creamy white head...nice lacing. Aroma has nice sitrus and stonefruits...just a hint of a buttery note. Flavor has mango and peach...a bit of spicy grapefruit...faint butter. Mouthfeel is light/medium and lively with a bitter/spicy citrus finish.
