In this realm we call earth, there is a breathtaking country off the SE coast of Australia – known to some as Aotearoa, most of us know it by the name New Zealand. Though there may not be Hobbits as some have come to expect, we have instead located the next hop for our Spice of Life series – Wakatu. New Zealand Hop Farm before the Harvest Our scientists are formulating use of this New Zealand variety as the the sole spice in October’s Spice of Life release. The decision to procure these exotic hops was not for lack of variety and flavor in American hops, but instead to continue to broaden our palates (and hopefully many of yours). Wakatu is internationally recognized as a benchmark dual-purpose (aroma and bittering) hop and is prized for its well-rounded flavor. Originally derived from Hallertau Aroma Hops, Wakatu is a hybrid in every sense of the word, and has been optimized for cultivation in the southern hemisphere. Monks have been experimenting with horticultural cross-genetic permutations for centuries… This of course took place when not brewing beer. We agree that the honed results make for a truly rewarding finish. A fine pour of Wakatu October’s Spice of Life has landed with an ABV of 5.7% and a hop-pleasing IBU of 75. Golden orange in color, the hop flavor is perceived as a sweet mixture of vanilla and pine, says head brewer Pete Dickson. Spice of Life Wakatu is available now at select locations featuring Sixpoint.

Pours burnt orange with an off-white head. Aroma is floral, floral and more floral. Some earth and caramel came through as it warmed. Taste was sweet with a nice bitter kick. Medium bodied with an almost oily texture, very smooth. Very enjoyable, would be fantastic in the summer.

extrremely floral IPA, hibiscus and honey. This is very cool, never even heard of this hop before.

(Draught) clearish medium-light gold, thick creamy offwhite head with excellent lacing. Nose of biscuit, freshly malted grain, light citrus rind, German hops, light earthiness. Taste of lightly earthy hops, sweet cream (seriously reminds me of a cream ale), medium carbonation, creamy finish, light orange rind finish, easy drinking and light spicy finish.

Draft. Pours golden orange with a white head. Floral, lightly citric, and some woody/cedar-like notes, on a pale plain malty base. Quick spicy hoppy finish. Solid stuff.

On tap at Good Beer, part of a single hop series by Sixpoint. I never heard of this New Zealand hop before, and it is a nice one - mellow and smooth, with a bit of melon and peach. Light bitterness. Very nice.

In short: A smooth floral and slightly spicy blond IPA.
How: Tap at Three Penny Taproom, Montpelier VT.
The look: Cloudy pale blond body topped by a small persistent white head.
In long: Nose is smoothly hoppy with soft floral notes, a bit dank, some watermelons. Taste offers a discreet pale malt body with almost no sweetness flavors. I think this shy malt backbone is appropriate for the smooth character of the hop profile. Far from intense, hopping is mostly floral, a bit grassy and with light spicy notes. Round bitterness of low-medium intensity. This is a relatively smooth IPA, tasty but never aggressive, a highly sessionnable beer but not one for the hopheads and bitterness lover. And I think it is pretty racist that pub owners force me to pay for my beer just because I’m not from the middle-eastern and with a bomb strapped to my body, racist I tell you.

Location: Draft at RnH, 3/26/13

Aroma: The nose has floral hops, grapefruit, citrus rind, and some grainy notes
Appearance: This one has a hazy yellow pour, with a white head, and lots of sticky lace
Flavor: The taste is light sweet first and then it gets slightly more bitter later on
Palate: The body is medium, it is a hint sticky, with a dry, almost abrupt finish to it
Overall Impression: This one is actually pretty solid. It isn’t an absolute standout of an IPA, nor it is a hop bomb, but I was happy to try it. I’ll have to be on the lookout for more of beers from this series.

On tap at Ervs Mug. Hazy amber with a creamy tan head. Aroma of tropical fruits, pine and pale malt. Taste in different with garlic, pine, citrus, pale malt and a touch of nobility. Not very sweet with a moderate bitter finish.
