Bottle at Bishops Gamla Stan. Clear amber, short dirt white head. Strong vanilla bourbon aroma with caramel and peach grapefruit aroma. Pretty nice! Taste is a tired caramel APA with grapefruit lychee and vanilla bourbon. Medium body, soft carb, oily. Better than expected, but pretty old.

Röd till bärnstenfärgad öl med smutsvitt skum. Doft av fat, vanilj, karamell och apelsinmarmelad. I smaken tillkommer lite tallbarr och fler exotiska frukter.

The Three Johns. Keg. Lightly hazy amber beer, small pale cream colour head. Palate is light and semi dry. Decent fine carbonation. Mellow bourbon and a little vanilla. Trace of dried fruits. Mild spice precedes a light dry finish. Tasty and easy going but like any barrel aged hoppy affair could have done with some dry hopping to bring back some hop character. Mildly bitter bourbon linger.

Aroma: bourbon, grain and bread malts, caramel. Appearance: hazy, dark brown, small, creamy, beige head. Taste: light bitter. Palate: sweets turning up quickly, quite heavy, bourbon flavours dominating, soft carbonation, full body. Overall: very nice APA, though not typical, bourbon cask is way too dominating. Pint at CASK, Aberdeen.

On tap @ Stout Barrel House, Chicago. Medium golden Amber with a low off white head. Woody caramel, vanilla, and soft fruity hops, traces of pine. Improbably, this worked for me.

Bottle and served in da snifter : Been aged and confused for so long its not true...

The weirdness that happens when you barrel age an APA but it works for the most part. The booze and light bourbon notes do dominate the base beer but more transformed it into something else. Alas that something else it a bit tame upon the finish. Muddled and mundane mouthfeel and resiny tones. Still it was worth the price of admission and the double waxed bottle ONCE.

UPDATED: MAY 15, 2015 (Bottle sample at tasting, VilleValla Pub, Linköping, Jan 26 2015) Pours a murky deep red brown with a big off white head and huge lace. Aroma is loads and loads of bourbon barrel and vanilla, toffee, candied orange, light pine. Palate caramel, toffee, orange, earthy, pine, loads and loads of bourbon and vanilla again, and slight char, maybe some mango. Kind of a woody dryness and a bit of hop bitterness. Wood, bourbon, bitterness in the aftertaste. Average body and soft carb. A bit odd, these bourbon barrel APAs - something like this needs to be dry hopped to replace the faded hops though they weren’t completely absent. It’s ok but it’s not really the beer for the barrel.

On tap at John’s Restaurant & Tavern in Winfield, IL. as a 12 oz. serving to tall stemware, showing a clear, deep amber color, with silky, off white head foam, and curtainy cling to the lacing. The nose was a blend of stone fruit, dark cherry, and a touch of citrus, with hints of barrel induced vanilla, caramel sweetness, oakiness, and bourbon. The flavor was similar notes, including some moderate dry, tannic, and earthy bitterness. Medium bodied, with modest carbonation, and just a bit of pleasant warmth to the alcohol and bourbon traces. Nicely complex. Took a simple, sessionable Pale, and made it something special.
