It’s Old Man Bitter

A mix of citrus and pine that will remind you of the time you went on a vision quest with your Native American cousin and you woke up in a pine grove full of grapefruit trees.

An American-style India Pale Ale with a deep golden-orange color. Bitter and hoppy, with a surprisingly smooth finish.

Modus Hoperandi, an IPA sitting at 6.8% ABV and 65 IBUs.

Can from systembolaget Nyköping. Amber color with lacing white head. Aroma has tropical fruits, pine. Taste is malty with long bitter aftertaste. Flavors of grapefruit, pine, resin, caramel. Tasty and balanced IPA.

Can ( from the can). Mean looking yellowy head in the aperture. Smells like sharp vibrant pineapple rock. Oh yeah, it’s big sweet maltiness up front but in a more smooth and restrained way than I’ve ever seen before. It gives way at just the right time to a glorious fresh hoppy pineapple with a subtle resinous aromatic pine which seems to rise like ether and underpins it all beautifully. This has that world class unfolding quality that I get with Bathams and Sculpin which keeps me going back for sup after sup. CRIMINAL at 6.8. Lovely branding too. Beer good enough to make you emotional.

Really pouring get golden with a white head. Nose is hoppy rich with pine and citric notes. Taste is also rich with a lot of citrus and some pine. Taste and palate comes along and leaves a sweet but still bitter note with a lot of hops along.

This beer is not for me. To try and describe the smell/flavour I would say old orange peel, or the same flavours I find in both lagunitas and sierra Nevada. So if you like either of those beers this is up your street.

Can from Bruisin’ Ales. Citrus, resin, and pine aroma. Citrus and pine taste with raisin notes and a moderate bitterness. Good stuff, but wish it was fresher.

To be fair I drank this in a plastic cup in a shopping mall in Singapore. But my surprise in scoring such a well rated craft beer was a little dampened by the overall experience. It’s good but I’d heard a lot about his beer and expected better. Plenty of length on the pallet, fairly well rounded overall. Quite citrusy. Maybe a little too much for me. But a lovely sweetness down the back too. Great colour. Would happily go again but won’t win best US IPa for me.

Amber colour with nice foam. SHarp citrusy aroma, some pine mixed with a soapy fragrance!? This one also has the not so pleasant smell Taste is surprisingly malty, the sparkling fruityness not appearing and dominated in the end by an unpleasant bitterness, almost no carbonation at all! I count this one as a bad example of the beer.

UPDATED: MAY 1, 2016 Can from Hops & Crafts Exeter, pours beautifully clear bronze with a dense white head, aroma is very piney withfruit & spicy notes with some burnt caramel taste is initially fresh pine with pinapple & some bitter grapefruit with good malt back up almost like burnt caramel & nice bitterness maybe slightly astringent leading into the pleasing bitter hoppy finish ,but for me what makes this beer stand out is its mouth feel smooth & medium bodied ,slightly oily with low to medium carbonation that kinda leaves u wanting more!
