It’s Old Man Bitter

A mix of citrus and pine that will remind you of the time you went on a vision quest with your Native American cousin and you woke up in a pine grove full of grapefruit trees.

An American-style India Pale Ale with a deep golden-orange color. Bitter and hoppy, with a surprisingly smooth finish.

Modus Hoperandi, an IPA sitting at 6.8% ABV and 65 IBUs.

On tap at the hotel lobby bar in Denver (Grand Hyatt). Pours amber orange color with a small creamy off white head. Big grapefruit and pine on the nose, some grass, and surprisingly strong sweet malts going on here. Flavor follows with a massive punch of dry bitterness, pine, bitter grapefruit, some mango. Resinous and bitter, finishing dry, with medium body and medium plus carbonation. This beer was excellent and reminded me a lot of an amped up Jai Alai. Definitely worth a go.

Can from StarmoreBoss, Sheffield. Clear, amber colour. Thick, lasting, white head. Ripe orange. Toffee. Pine resin. Citrus. Taste is pine cone fresh sweetness. Pine bitterness. Palate is oily, greasy and chewy. Big, pithy, piny bitter finish. Very nice.

Can from whole foods London Piccadilly. It pours clear amber with a decent off-white head. The nose is over-ripe passion fruit, orange peel, fruit syrup, wood, toffee and baked goods. The taste is bitter, pine, toffee, grapefruit, pepper, light resin, alcohol warmth and marmalade with a lingering dry finish. Medium body body and average carbonation. Pretty solid stuff. Enjoyed best straight out of the can.

Dark tan head, fairly large. Deep orange gold color, quite clear. Quite visible carbonation. Piney, resinous nose, some citrus. Small amount of earthiness. Back of the mouth sort of deep bitterness. Pleasant lingering sweetness as the beer warmed up a touch. Medium body, fairly oily, touch of alcohol, fairly lively carbonation, pretty acidic. Medium long finish. Fairly straightforward. Not terribly well balanced, but still very enjoyable.

A surprising big beer with a great hop profile. It tastes higher than 65 ibus. The malts are a little hidden by the hop punch. Hop lovers unite!
