It’s Old Man Bitter

A mix of citrus and pine that will remind you of the time you went on a vision quest with your Native American cousin and you woke up in a pine grove full of grapefruit trees.

An American-style India Pale Ale with a deep golden-orange color. Bitter and hoppy, with a surprisingly smooth finish.

Modus Hoperandi, an IPA sitting at 6.8% ABV and 65 IBUs.

Can thanks to Nolen! Pours crystal clear amber with a small off-white head that leaves good lacing. Aroma is pine and grapefruit, touch of dankness. Light sweet, medium bitter. Medium body. Good, but fairly standard, IPA.

7/10/014. From can. Amber color with a white head. Caramel, grapefruit, pine aromas. Caramel flavors up front, a bit buttery, but the grapefruit follows. I was not too thrilled about this one at first, but it opens up after a few sips.

Can. Pours a very clear rusty orange. Smell is citrus and pine, taste is much the same. Bitter up front with caramel malt character, subdued fruity hop qualities on the finish. Well done but not a personal favorite.

12 oz can poured into a Spiegelau tulip. Clear amber/golden brown with 2.5 fingers of off-white head. Light lacing. Aromas of toast, biscuit, nutty notes, citrus. Tastes of toast, biscuit, some nutty notes, grapefruit citrus, sweet malt, light pine and resin, bitter floral and piney hops. Medium body with a dry finish. Medium carbonation, semi-malty mouthfeel.

Modus Hoperandi is a staple of Colorado’s craft beer scene. It’s an undeniably impressive feat to have an IPA (one of the most overdone craft styles) that stands out in a state that makes a shit ton of great brews. Needless to say, the awesome can art and sweet name aren’t all that this beer has going for it. Modus Hoperandi has an amber color with some haze and an abundant off-white head. Smell is complex but a little light. There’s pine, grapefruit, caramel, and subtle pineapple in the aroma. Taste incorporates all of those elements. The strong grapefruit and pine notes are paired with resinous bitterness. Yet, the ale’s surprisingly malty middle smooths out the flavor and shows off the hops’ tropical notes. Pineapple, mango, and orange flavors are given a brief appearance. The finish is refreshingly wet with a lingering bitterness that sticks to the palate, tongue, and roof of the mouth. While I prefer American IPA’s that are more crisp (and bitter) than this, I love Modus Hoperandi’s depth of flavor and solid balance. Though the ABV and IBU’s aren’t as high as some of the newer IPA’s on the market, this beer is still an icon.

I see the 98 score but this beer is a little outside my style of IPA. The beer has tons of caramel malt that eclipse the aroma hops I like in an IPA. There is a nice bittering hop finish, though. Overall, the beer is out-of-balance for my taste, but for the CaraMalt fans this is a winner.

Can, bbf December 2014. The name of this brewery and the beer does set off my crap alarm. It pours clear copper with a small white head. Caramel, soap, sweet onion, grain, bread. Reminds me a bit of a lighter version of Gubna. Pretty big bodied, oily texture, medium carbonation, medium sweet and bitter. Malty and not crisp.
