It’s Old Man Bitter

A mix of citrus and pine that will remind you of the time you went on a vision quest with your Native American cousin and you woke up in a pine grove full of grapefruit trees.

An American-style India Pale Ale with a deep golden-orange color. Bitter and hoppy, with a surprisingly smooth finish.

Modus Hoperandi, an IPA sitting at 6.8% ABV and 65 IBUs.

355ml can paired with mild spiced meat at Olympen. Unclear, dark amber body. Moderate white head that left fine artworks on the glassware. Aromatic with floral and fruity hops. Lovely taste of dark oranges, grapefruits and pine needles added by herbal hops and a touch of sweet malts. Solid bitter support to the finish. Prima version of an IPA (Oslo, 26.09.2011).

Carmel orange reddish color, pure white bubbly foam head, medium carbonation. Smells spicy with strong hopsy pine/citrus notes. Very thin, very easy drinking. Citrusy american hops flavor, the red wheat adds a nice balance to the bitterness. This is the best canned IPA I have ever drank. Great example of the American take on the India Pale Ale.

Cans. Deep amber, almost copper color with stable cap. Nose is bright minty hop, paving the way for a mouthful of the same. Not quite mouthwash level but very minty! Finishes clean and earthy. Balanced, very nice. Sort of a blackberry-mint flavor profile.

Shared can at Cardinal. Hazy, deep golden with a three finger thick, light brown, creamy head leaving good lacing. Herbal and floral nose as well as fresh hops and toasted malts. Sweet, bitter and light acidic flavors with caramel present. Medium to full body. A smooth and refreshing drink leaving a dry tongue.

Can from trip to NC. pours out a moderate orange/golden color with a small off white head. Aroma is citrus, light floral hops, slight pine and some sweet malts. Taste is much the same, decent hop depth, with a nice balance. Solid IPA, and I like the label....and the fact it comes in a can.

Can. Dark amber and bright. Big dry-hop aroma, lots of herbal and slightly piney character, maybe a little bit spicy as well. Spicy, richly hopped brew, quite piney and resiny. Lively, this is a bright, vibrant and refreshing example.

Amber, not a lot of head. Aroma is sappy pineapple with the taste being a pineapple and pine resin with a good dose of bitterness along for the ride. The finish is a malty smoothness with more bitter at the end.

355 ml can, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is not mentioned on the can. Amber colour, large to moderate lasting white head. Lovely aroma of American hops, notes of citrus fruits, tropical fruits and spruce. Medium body. The flavour has moderate notes of grapefruit and spruce / pine, not extreme in any way. Very enjoyable.

1. Look – A medium to dark golden ale with a small head that dissolves very quickly. 2. Sniff – There is a strong malty aroma. 3. Sip – This is a bitter IPA. There is a big bitterness that is long lasting with a very subtle piney taste as well. 4. Another Look – This is a dark IPA. It loses some of its appeal the head dissolves and there is not much lacing either. 5. Evaluate - Overall, I really enjoyed this beer. It is darker than most IPA’s and has a great malty taste with a bitter finish. I can’t wait to pick up a six-pack on my next trip to the liquor store. This IPA might become my new “go-to” IPA.

12oz can. Damn perfect canned IPA. Intense bitter balances well w/ sweet drinkability. Could be more complex in the palate & finish. Extra points for can & name.
