It’s Old Man Bitter

A mix of citrus and pine that will remind you of the time you went on a vision quest with your Native American cousin and you woke up in a pine grove full of grapefruit trees.

An American-style India Pale Ale with a deep golden-orange color. Bitter and hoppy, with a surprisingly smooth finish.

Modus Hoperandi, an IPA sitting at 6.8% ABV and 65 IBUs.

Can. Pours light amber/golden with white head and good lacing. Aroma is pleasant citrus, pine, and flowery hops. Flavor is hoppy bitter with notes of grapefruit and a nice malty balance. Mouthfeel is smooth and leaves just a slight bitterness on the finish.

Can (awesome!) Pour is clear brilliant golden/ orange with minimal white head. Aroma is loaded with citrus and pine hop. Aroma is very fresh and full. Flavor also with citrus and pine hops with a little malt backbone. Really clean, crisp, and to the point. Great beer. Love cans.

12oz can. Filtered, deep amber-tan color. Creamy, lacy head. Full bodied, robust IPA. Well done. Toasty malt backbone. Solid grapefruit, orange-citrus hop flavors. Pretty much packs the hop punch of most Imperial IPAs, but with a creamier, mellower body. Well balanced.

Can from a trade with cbkschubert. Pours clear copper color with off white head. Juicy citrus hop aroma with some caramel. Bitter pine hop flavor with some grapefruit rind and a touch of malt sweetness. Medium body with moderate carbonation. A nice IPA. Thanks Craig.

12 ounce bottle purchased at Sun Devil Liquors in Phoenix while visiting there. Enjoyed in the little glass in the hotel room. Pours a clear orange-amber with one finger of off-white foam. Aroma full of nice grapefruit and also pine/spruce, spicy hops, and hints of tropical fruit (pineapple). Flavor starts with big hoppy bitterness with a strong grapefruit presence then the malt character makes itself better known. The flavor leans much more toward bitter than sweet. Bitter finish with more fruity notes in the end (peach, grapefruit). (291, 397)

From the can with the awesome label. Pours very dark golden, little head, fairly tenacious lacing. Aroma doesn’t quite hit me for some reason. Great citrus, grapefruit hops and fairly intense bitterness that sticks around in the aftertaste for quite a while. Not much malt or sweetness detectable. Solid IPA on my list of "try every once in a while" beers.

[Tap] Pours a light orange color with a stout white head. Thick, hoppy aroma of grapefruit, citrus and pineapple. Lots of orange and some spruce in the taste. More malty than I expected as well. Some bread, sticky sweet rolls and caramel even out the initial hop kick. Solid mouthfeel and spicy hop/herbal finish. Low carbonation. Well made and easy to drink.

Poured from a 12 ounce can into a Samuel Adams Perfect Pint glass. Best by 02/21/11 printed on can. Appearance: Pours a clear medium golden amber with a 2-3 finger fluffy light tan head. Excellent head retention. Smell: Sweet citrus, grapefruit and piney hops with a light caramel malt background. Taste: Grapefruit and pine up front with a hint of toasted malt in the middle and more bitter grapefruit at the finish. Very bitter lemon zest aftertaste. The taste is nowhere near as sweet as the aroma. Not a bad thing. Mouthfeel: Light-to-medium-bodied with a good amount of carbonation. Quite sticky from the oily hops. Drinkability: Very high drinkability. You could knock back a few without much difficulty. Overall: Very solid IPA. I prefer a little more sweetness to balance out the bitterness but this will definitely do. Worth trying for sure.

Copper colored pour from a can. Thin head. Aroma and taste is pine, citrus and hops. In a word - excellent. This is what an IPA should taste like. Very well balanced.

Funny how I sometimes forget to rate beers that are a staple consumption item. Moderate orange color, sparing head formation. Great hoppy aroma trending towards piney and herbal side, light bit of caramel malt as well. Well constructed body with lots of piney hops flavors, but not overly dry and devoid of all malt contributions. Prickly finish with a light bit of dustiness.
