Itís Old Man Bitter

A mix of citrus and pine that will remind you of the time you went on a vision quest with your Native American cousin and you woke up in a pine grove full of grapefruit trees.

An American-style India Pale Ale with a deep golden-orange color. Bitter and hoppy, with a surprisingly smooth finish.

Modus Hoperandi, an IPA sitting at 6.8% ABV and 65 IBUs.

Hard to find a flaw. Wonderful aroma of cascades, lovely carmel color and nice tight white head. Stong bitterness and complex hop flavors with understated malty body. Very much in the west coast style of IPA. Great can illustration too.

Pours a lightly hazy amber with a medium creamy white lacing head. Aroma of fresh American hops, pine, citrus, floral with some caramel malt. Flavor of pine, grapefruit American hops and nice and dry.

Enjoyed while camping in 90+ degree heat; amber, nice head, sticky lacing, bready, grassy, a bit of sweetness, pine; one of my new favorite go-to beers, if only the stores here could keep them in stock

Poured from can. Deep amber/brown, very clear. Large off-white lumpy head the lingers forever, tons of lace. Massive pine nose, some grapefruit. All hops, no malt character evident in smell. Taste: like drinking a pine tree! No too bitter, pleasant lingering aftertaste of pine. The columbus hops (guess) really come though to make the hop flavor something other than just cascade. Good mouthfeel even though itís not a balanced beer, very well put together. Perfect carbonation level for IPA.

Pours deep orange-amber into the glass, with a firm sticky suds head that leaves thick lace. Huge pine and grapefuit nose. Bold bitters surround grapefuit and some malts. Long bitter pine finish. Bold palate and sticky mouthfeel. Great IPA.

Strong hop aroma. Some malt aroma in the background. Pours a big head. Red-amber color. Super hoppy, very high IBU beer, very bitter. Lots of hop flavor. This beer is definitely all about the hops. No attempt at hop/malt balance. Its just about the hops. Thinner body than I expected. The strong hop flavor lingers for a long time after drinking. A true hop loverís beer.

Cheap sixer from Whole Foods, Durham. Nice amber pour, with a roiling carbonation and a nice two-finger head that leaves sticky lacing. Hops in the nose arenít quite as bitter as I was hoping for, with a strong bready character that to me went just a bit beyond the sweet spot of being balanced. Nice mouthfeel, with lively but not over-active carbonation, and a hint of slickness in the finish. More malt sweetness in the flavor, and Iím wondering if I got the freshest can or not. But overall itís a modest and well-priced IPA thatís refreshing and accessible even if not perfectly balanced or overly complex.

(can) great resin/grassy hops aroma. Flavor is well balance resiny/grassy hops with caramel malt. Appearance points are for the can - itís great to have good beer choices for places where bottles arenít allowed.

Can From Friar Tuck in Savoy, IL. Pours a red amber with a two finger light tan head that dissipates to a retentive ring. Aroma of pale malts and floral hops. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Flavor of pale caramel malts that sits behind and firm, aggressive piney hoppiness. Long aggressive citrus rind bitterness on the finish, with a tad amount of hop astringency and lingering soap. Decent, but needs some refining.
