It’s Old Man Bitter

A mix of citrus and pine that will remind you of the time you went on a vision quest with your Native American cousin and you woke up in a pine grove full of grapefruit trees.

An American-style India Pale Ale with a deep golden-orange color. Bitter and hoppy, with a surprisingly smooth finish.

Modus Hoperandi, an IPA sitting at 6.8% ABV and 65 IBUs.

As a fan of ska music and a fan of beer, this brewery has always intrigued me. The beer has made it into North Carolina this year and this was one of the Ska Brewing products I picked up on a recent trip north. I find an IPA is rarely a bad place to start when you’re checking out a new brewery. If you needed a picture of what an IPA was supposed to look like, this beer could be the example. It pours bright copper and is topped with a frothy ivory head. Intricate, fine lacing left on the glass. A lovely aroma, grassy and herbal hops with a strong grapefruit smell wrapped around it all. As the aroma indicates, the mouth is filled with tons of juicy hop flavors. There’s the grapefruit but also orange rind, lemon zest and a bit of tangerine. Moving past the citrus, there are piney, herbal and floral hops. Underneath, the malt gives a nice caramel and biscuity malt profile. A creamy texture. Smooth and finishes with a bitter citrusy aftertaste. It doesn’t break any new ground but it delivers all you would want from an IPA. Tasty!

Thanks to a trade with emmasdad, 12 oz. can into a standard pint Poured a dark, burnt orange with a 2-finger head that quickly settled into a frothy coating. Lacing is abundant and lasting. Nose is citrus (orange/lemon/grapefruit), piney and floral. Taste is citrus up front, oily and pine, some expected bitter edges with a pretty nice sweetness to balance this all the way through. Mouthfeel is medium with some carbonation. Good taste and reasonable ABV make this very sessionable. This is a nicely balanced, tasty brew I will seek out again for sure.

12 oz can. Amber/copper with a thick off white head. Huge citrus and floral pine aroma. Bitter flavor up front with a good caramel malt backbone. Medium body with average carbonation and a dry bitter finish. This is a great fresh, So Cal style IPA. Love it!

Appearance: Slightly hazy copper body with a 1 finger khaki crown that shows a some retention and lace. Smell: Very well blended citrus hop, floral hop, caramel malt IPA with grassy notes. Taste: Good amount of bitter hops and tangerine notes flowing over a light caramel malt body. Nice bitter finish. Mouthfeel: Really crisp and well carbonated but paradoxically with a nice coating quality. Medium bodied. Drinkability: A good flavor profile and excellent mouthfeel make this a very drinkable brew. Can courtesy of tgenenbacher. Pour nice amber color with a off-white head. Nose is full of floral hops, sweet malts, and citrus. Flavor is the same as the nose with big hops and citrus followed by a nice bitter finish. Medium bodied and a good IPA.

Beautiful dark gold. A nose of hops you can smell from 2 feet away. Freshly mown grass, rubber and wildflowers. Head leaves quickly, but glass is laced nicely. Taste is fresh and clean. Hops are not near the onslaught the aroma hinted at. Nice balance. Not my style but I would drink it again. Very pleasantly quenching. Third and final flavor from the SKA mixed twelve-pack. Certainly the best of the three.

This is a solid IPA, with many characteristics of an imperial IPA. It has a good mix of hops flavors that aren’t drowned out by the bitterness or the alcohol. Rich golden color.

On tap at the Flying Saucer in Austin. Clear and red-orange with a thin head that lightly covers the full surface of the beer. Light lacing. Nose is reminiscent of peaches and citrus. The flavor is fairly malty-sweet but still light, with warm citrus tones and a mild/medium bitter bite at the finish. Somewhat low carbonation - that might just be this particular tap - but very smooth and pleasant. Really an awesome IPA, and very refreshing out in the 95-degree heat. I NEED to find the cans of this one...

A deep amber pour with off-white head. The nose is dominated with pine and citrus. The medium body has a bitter taste that retains a malty, caramel backbone. A very nice IPA.

Bottle thanks to Bardwashrind (BA)!
Fiery amber body with a soapy white head. Nose is soap, pine, some caramel malt sweetness adding a light balance. Bitter flavor is astringently soapy, some grapefruit and pine. Lightly grassy and salty finish to the moderate body. Quite clean and bitter, but the hop could use some balance, whether with different variety or more malt. It comes off singular and lightly offensive as is, particularly in the flavor.
