Itís Old Man Bitter

A mix of citrus and pine that will remind you of the time you went on a vision quest with your Native American cousin and you woke up in a pine grove full of grapefruit trees.

An American-style India Pale Ale with a deep golden-orange color. Bitter and hoppy, with a surprisingly smooth finish.

Modus Hoperandi, an IPA sitting at 6.8% ABV and 65 IBUs.

Thanks to rustychiles for the hand-delivered can. Pours a cloudy amber with sustained head. Aroma of very very fresh hops; lots of citrus and floral notes. Taste is quite a bit cleaner than expected. Has a definite spicy hop bite aftertaste. Quite resiny for a singly IPA. Not much bitterness for an IPA, definitely tilted more towards the flavoring and aroma hops. The aroma is at least twice as good as the taste, unfortunately. If only the hops tastes half as clean and good as the beer smells. Then itíd be a much better offering in my opinion.

UPDATED: AUG 30, 2013 Bottle. Poured a clear amber-orange color with a 2 inch thick, dense off-white head that faded to a layer and left some spotty lacing. Aroma of light caramel, a light leafy hoppiness, and some moderate fruitiness (orange and soft grapefruit). Smooth, moderately sweet entry with some light caramel paired with a soft orange leads into a moderately bitter, leafy hoppiness with some light pine undertones with some hints of tart grapefruit that finishes relatively smooth with a light sweetness. Moderate carbonation and somewhat heavy mouthfeel for an IPA. Overall, this is a decent IPA, but it doesnít seem to have the dryness nor the bright fruitiness that I prefer in my IPAs. Still a solid effort by Ska.

Bottle poured a clear amber with a small diminishing amber head. Aromas of pink grapefruit, orange, light earthiness and light carmel. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of carmel, pine, orange, pink grapefruit and light earthiness with a smooth dry lingering bitter fruity finish.

In the can at the 2009 Crescent Moon Extreme Beerfest. Pours dark gold with a quickly dying white head. Very nice citrus and grapefruit aroma. The flavor is not as impressive and as bditty187 might say, it is rather pedestrian. Iíll need to down a six pack of this to really appreciate it, as I suspect it gets lost at a big beer fest.

Straight from the can. This brew is thick and creamy with tones of hop essence. I guessed well above the 70 IBUís claimed by the brewery. An excellent all around IPA and it hitís my preferred 7 % abv. Cool pkg to boot.

Can @ BlueBird in Chicago. I have seen some Ska beer in town before, but I have never seen cans of SKA stuff yet. Pours cloudy cooper with white head. Nice hoppy aroma, pine and grapefruit. Very good bitter finish. I will be having this one again. My friend liked it better than the Alpha King I had before this (I didnít agree).

Couldnít resist the cans... Pours a clear glowing amber with a dense sticky-looking off-white froth on top that leaves thick lacing. Aroma is quite peachy, light grapefruit over sweeter toasted caramel malt. Flavor is quite assertive but in a balanced way. Fruity/citrus at first and then very salty and caramel sweet with a grapefruit finish. Heavy water mouth-feel with soft soda carbonation and slightly sticky. A nice flavorful IPA with that has a little bit of everything and the body to back it up.

Bottled the third week in February. Pours a mostly clear, copper color with an off-white, average, creamy, lightly rocky head which is mostly lasting and leaves some sporatic lace. Nose is filled with thick pine resins, light black pepper, lemon zest, and grapefruit. Flavor is nice with a sweet caramel and toasted grain bread malt base and hop notes of heavily resinous pine, juicy grapefruit, light dry grass and a moderately high bitterness. Palate is medium, lightly creamy, lightly sticky, and nearly lively. Finishes mostly bitter and long with juicy grapefruit lingering underneath resins, light spicy notes, and lemon zest. Nice IPA with a nice malt balance underneath a great hop bitterness. Grapefruit notes are awesome, so juicy. The only thing this one needs is a bit more attractive aroma.

Dark copper pour with a tall eggshell head and minimal lacing. Aroma is bright bold citrus and sharp cutting pine. Flavor is heavy resin, lemon zest and grapefruit with little malt to balance it out. Medium mouthfeel. Not bad.

Open the can and feel the hops! Hit me in the teeth and made me want to chew on the flower itself. Looks great when ouring it out of the can into a pint glass with amber color and full white head. Goes down great with a desire for the next sip apparant. Finish is smooth for am IPA!
