Itís Old Man Bitter

A mix of citrus and pine that will remind you of the time you went on a vision quest with your Native American cousin and you woke up in a pine grove full of grapefruit trees.

An American-style India Pale Ale with a deep golden-orange color. Bitter and hoppy, with a surprisingly smooth finish.

Modus Hoperandi, an IPA sitting at 6.8% ABV and 65 IBUs.

Iím not going to complicate this one because itís just a damn good IPA. It pours a nice amber color with a very frothy head that lingers. The aroma is as good as any beer youíve ever had. The taste is nothing short of fantastic. The right amount of "hop" in the middle that just hangs there and then finishes as smooth as any IPA Iíve had. Thank you again Beertopia. Who would have thought a six pack of cans could taste this good.

Bottle, pours a clear red amber with thick soft off white head, looks great. Aroma, a subtle smokey chardness, with lots of pine. Initial taste malty sweet with huge pine hops, very dry finish, makes the mouth salivate for more. A very good ipa

Clear reddish amber-thick off-white head, Aroma strong with caramel malt, piney hops, herbal, some citrus. resinous piney hop flavor-chewy, slightly rough around the edges, but I like it. medium body, would make a great session beer- good balance of malt, hops, and bitterness, A little different, but good.

THOUGHTS: Another wonderful canned beer. Great balance. Not much to say, itís just a great beer. TECHNICAL: Can. Poured a sparkling, clear, light to medium, orangey amber with a large, off-white head that kept a small head and left excellent lacing. The aroma had moderate caramel; and moderate to heavy grapefruit and orange hops; lighter pine hops and hints of underlying resinous hops. The initial flavor was sweet and light to moderately bitter; while the finish was sweet and rather bitter with a long duration. There was grape fruit, caramel malt, a little pine, orange rind, then a little rubbery and resinous hops at the tail end keeping it from being perfect in my mind. The light to medium body was a bit syrupy and sticky on the lips with fizzy and tingly carbonation and a slightly metallic finish.

First tried this at Durham World Beer Festival 2010. Good pour from the can with biggish bubble head and sturdy lacing. A bit of barn and dirt in the nose (did someone spill gueuze in this batch??). Hops all over my tongue but balanced by sweet malt body. Smoother than most IPAs--doesnít have that snap/dryness to it.

Ska produces another fine brew that comes in a can (!). Great taste made more entertaining by the can design. Worth a try for IPA fans. Break out your Specials records and skank to the Modus.

Can. Pours a clear dark amber with a huge fluffy white head. Light aroma, of citrus, hops, malt, a hint of pine and sugar. Taste is bitter and smooth, of hops, malt, citrus, sugar, and a bit floral. Lingering creamy bitterness. Decent.

UPDATED: AUG 30, 2011 Pours a medium reddish brown with an off-white head out of a can. Very hoppy aroma. Biting flavor, with a hoppy finish. Tastes a lot better when itís not ice cold.
