COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
It’s Old Man Bitter

A mix of citrus and pine that will remind you of the time you went on a vision quest with your Native American cousin and you woke up in a pine grove full of grapefruit trees.

An American-style India Pale Ale with a deep golden-orange color. Bitter and hoppy, with a surprisingly smooth finish.

Modus Hoperandi, an IPA sitting at 6.8% ABV and 65 IBUs.

Clear amber color, head of mixed bubbles that leaves a lattice of lace as it diminishes. There is something real satisfying in opening a can of beer and smelling a big rush of American hops. The nose here is dominated by piny aromas w/ a little husky malt around the edges. The flavor too has that astringent husky character reminiscent of iced tea which is something I rather like and is complimented by sweetness and a very slight tartness that is enough to give the impression of lemon. Palate is creamy and somewhat light, maybe just a tad lacking carbonation. Finishes really smooth w/ more piny hops. A very nice IPA.

12oz Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy golden orange color with a short thick head. Really nice hop aromas with notes of peaches, pine and some doughy yeast. Palate is medium and oily. Flavor is somewhat sweet with loads of fruity hops and a lingering finish. Definitely hop-forwrad on this one. Overall not so balanced yet a very nice hoppy IPA.

UPDATED: AUG 8, 2011 12 oz can. Pours a deep amber gold color with a small off white head. Aroma is very piney, hop forward of course, some caramel. Didn’t get as much of the citric as other people it’d seem, maybe it was a bit old. Very straightforward on the hops though, a little bit grassy. Flavor starts with a small sweet toffee character but quickly goes bitter, and stays that way through the finish. It felt like a lot more than 70 IBU. Finishes with the sharp pine, maybe a little bit of citric, but not much. The bitterness lingers for a bit. Medium body and a crisp carbonation. Nice IPA, not easy drinking, but nice for hop heads. Rerate: 08/07/11 Had a very fresh can. Much better, piney herbal weedy hops, very good stuff.

2 finger head. I love that it comes in a can. I couldn’t see a fishing or camping trip complete without this beer or dales pale ale. Good beer equals better times!

12oz. can. Sweet, citric aroma, plenty of grapefruit, pine and toasty malts, along with hints of powdered sugar, lemon and floral hop. Hazy medium orange-amber color with a lasting, fine head and very nice lacing. Flavor is nicely hoppy and bitter throughout, with more pine and grapefruit, faintly sweet, light caramel malts and an earthy dryness creeping in towards the finish. Lingering hop tones late. Moderately effervescent and resinous mouthfeel, body is medium. Nicely drinkable.

12 oz. can. Clear amber color. Frothy cream colored head with decent lace on the glass. Floral, herby, citrus aroma. Smooth floral and citrus taste that turns sharp, hoppy and bitter (in a good way). Strong bitter aftertaste. Pretty average IPA with a strong bitterness that was enjoyable. Don’t let the can deceive you!

12 oz Bottle. Secret Santa, I think. Deep ruby amber color with thich but tiny head and gooey lace. Nose is sharp hops nose. Deep spicy fruitiness behind the hops. Taste is kinda bland compared to the nose. Bit of sweetness, bit of bitterness, but not much more. Feels like it’s lacking something.

For a canned IPA, not much carbonation. Nice bitter hops. Decent floral aroma. Not bad, but not amazing. I like the pronounced hoppy flavor that IPAs need.

12 oz. bottle courtesy of a trade with blutt59. Pours a hazy darkened gold that eventually becomes mostly clear. Moderate off-white head that lasted to the final sip and left partial lace. Very pleasant aroma of bright grapefruit and lemon citrus. The aroma is actually quite refreshing. The flavor is mild caramel with grapefruit and some lesser pine. Strong bitter finish that was honestly a bit too much for me. This one is for the hopheads.

Sample at the Eurostash II tasting on 12/12/09: Canned version. This brew is a clear copper color with a medium off-white head that has good retention. Sticky patches of lacing on the glass. Piney hops aroma with a good balance of malt. Medium body with a moderately bitter hops character that has citrusy and piney notes. This is offset by a fairly robust malty base. The finish is hoppy with a lingering bitterness left behind. Overall this is a straightforward and well-executed IPA.
