3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 13/20 BarossaLuke (419) - AUSTRALIA - JAN 27, 2012
Lovely amber and orange colour. Aroma has caramel notes with some great light crystal malt aromas. Not a lot of hops in the aroma. A medium bodied beer with great malt flavour and some nice but light richness to the flavour. the hops are there, this is a well bittered and well attenuated beer. This combines makes the beer a very drinkable one.

Tasted from bottle at The Handle Bar in Saint Louis, Missouri. Poured a transparent, reddish, deep amber color with average off-white head. Aromas of bread, caramel, light hops. Flavor was rich, bready, caramelly malt-sweetness with mild hops and fruity ale yeast esters. Light-medium body, creamy mouthfeel, average carbonation, fairly long-lasting bittersweet aftertaste. I’m glad Ratebeer categorizes this as an American Amber Ale, despite the bottle’s "Red Ale" label. Even though it has some reddish color, it is not roasty, tart, and dry like a true Irish Red Ale. If comparing to historical beer styles, the aromas and flavors are pretty close to Oktoberfest/Märzen. Nothing extreme or surprising here, but Pinstripe is a tasty everyday drink.

Draft @ Cortez beer fest. Pure amber with nice head. Bready aroma is nice, signaling good malt character. Almost Germanic, it’s so bready. Toasty, and tasty, mild, and greatly sessionable. Nice pocket for American red ales.

My first brew to try from Ska Brewing and, sadly, this one doesn’t hold up all too well. When compared to other red ales, this one falls short (in my opinion) of the red ale standards as there are far better choices of red ales out there. Not much to rant about when it comes to scent and flavor of this brew; I mean it’s basically a beer with no outstanding characteristics. I do hope that other brews in their line-up help change my first impressions.
