Crosling (1604), Loveland, Colorado, USA Sep 4, 2006 A Pint @ Durango’s beer bar Falconbrough’s. This was severely lacking in aroma and flavor character compared to other extreme Eisbocks I’ve had. I think you’ve gotta start with a juicier, fruitier doppelbock. TAR (1995), Boulder Co., Colorado, USA Aug 26, 2006 Draft: Brilliant rusty-orange. Big-bubbled off-white ring of foam. Hay, jelly, Munich malt, roasted nuts, and a berrylike fruitiness comprise the aroma. Merely a whiff of alcohol. Loose, spritzy carbonation. Quite beefy, initially, with sappy malts clinging to the palate and a lush underlying breadiness which provides depth and structure. Roastiness is a bit dirty and possesses enough force to impart a touch of astringency. Soothing sappiness absorbs the light spiciness that’s generated by the alcohol. Fairly minerally, as well. Finishes with peppery alcohol along with a nice blend of sweet hay and candy apples. They’ve done a nice job at concealing the alcohol, but overall I find this pretty dull. Body is medium amber.
Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (cookie, caramel), with light notes of vanilla and oak.
Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter.
Medium to full body, watery/syrupy texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic.
Surprisingly light on aroma. Flavor was enjoyable but unremarkable. Alcohol was masked enough to avoid being bothersome, but there certainly is some throat burn. Not bad overall.
