3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 12/20
Skagen Skawskum is one of those beers that I have a fondness of, more in theory than in reality (historical reasons). Bayer beer was a strong competitor to pilsner/lager in Norway and Denmark up to World War 2, but after that its fortunes dwindled quite a lot (probably the name Bayer not being very fortunate after 1945). My relative contention with this, and other beers of the kind is that I find them too sweet, with less hops than I would like, and a watery quality I don’t really find much use for. I guess for anyone wanting to appreciate a good munchner type malt, it is quite a find, and I personally think Skagens contribution is better than several of the Norwegian ones I drink once in a rare while. But, of course, I think anything from Skagen is fantastic.

50cl bottle from Cunningham - thanks!. Pours dark brown with a tan head. Malty aroma with roasty notes, dark bread, caramel and hints of dark dried fruits and spices. Sweet and malty, but balanced and surprisingly nice. Mild but pleasant bitterness. Easty to drink and quite tasty.

Bottled@EBF 2008. Deep ambery brown colour with a small off-white head. Aroma is mild toasted notes along with some raisins, sweet malts as well as some toffee. Flavour is rather similar, but has a quite strong hopprofile to it, giving it some grassy and herbal bitterness towards the finish.
