THOUGHTS: Nice beer, but not verty Christmasy. Sort of like a dubbel at first, but then the flavor got more complex as it warmed. It got a little more Christmasy as it warmed. Hid alcohol fairly well. Nice beer, but rather pricey at $12 a bottle. But if I can find it again next year, this might become an annual Christmas beverage for me. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, dark brownish red with an average, off-white head that mostly diminished and left good lacing at first and then virtually none. The aroma was light caramel malt, grape, cherry alcohol, dark fruit and some spices. The aroma was nice but a little weak until it was quite warm. The initial flavor was moderately sweet and lightly acidic, while the finish was moderately to heavily sweet, moderately bitter and slightly sour with an average duration. The flavor was of dark fruit, cherry, grapes, slight hops in the finish with maybe just a hint of chocolate. The light to medium body was a little dry and a little syrupy with very fizzy carbonation and a lightly astringent finish.

5000 (6027) - Hardened Liver, Washington, USA - JAN 1, 2008
Bottle: Dark brown, nearly black, murky, large pillowy light beige head, sticky lacing, lively carbonation.   Soft dark pitted fruit, some bready malts, slightly barnish.   As it warms I get a bit of soil or bark.   Pale malts on the tongue, not hefty, hints of dark pitted fruit.   A little shallow towards the back.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   The aroma and beginning of this beer made me think it would be much bigger, but in actually its dies rather quickly.   Lingering soily malts.   Decent, but not as special as I thought have thought given that it is a special release.

330 ml bottle from BevMo LaJolla as part of belgian style holiday gift pack. Pours dark brown and hazy with a large beige head that leaves thick lacing. Roasty and herby aroma, espresso, sweet basil, grass, molasses and bitter chocolate, with a little dust, bready yeast and clover. Sweetish, quite roasty, flavor, bitter chocolate, caramel, day old coffee, lots of bitter herbs, molasses, brown bread, floral hops and ash. Medium body, a bit dry with tingly carbonation.

Nothing so special I will remember. A sad thing to say in a world of so many fine beers. From a Christmas variety pack from Shelton Brothres purchased at Beeryard in Wayne, PA. Notes of cherry and chocolate and coffee. Nice belgian lace. Happy New Year to one and all

Pour is a dark brown with a average tan head. Aroma is brown sugar with molasses and a touch of yeast. Flavor is some brown sugar and caramel malts. Not much to this one. Nothing special and quite simple.

(330 ml bottle (stamped "exp 28/08/09", part of a Shelton Bros. Christmas gift pack) from <A HREF=http://www.ratebeer.com/Place/maine/topsham/b target=blank>Bootleggers) Chocolatey...Pours dark brown with two fingers of tan head that recedes slowly but is quite persistent. Aroma of brown sugar and raisins. Mouthfeel is medium-full, quite smooth. Curtains of lacing are quite persistent. Flavor is surprisingly quite chocolatey with some light brown sugar. Nice, interesting.

11.2 oz bottle from Holiday Wine Cellar. Viewed as a very dark brown with a huge fluffy pillow of a head. In the nose a nutty and roasted malt aroma takes over the senses and strikes my interest in what exactly does this taste like? The flavor is very mellow and lacks a strong personality but it will allow for a light carrying yeast along with semi sweet malt. A very easy going drink and palate that wasn’t anything special.

Dark brown, almost black coloured beer with a large creamy off-white head. Light roasted malty aroma with hints of caramel, ripe fruits and nuts. Full palate. Finish is light bitter, roasted, fruity witha touch of coffe and light alcoholic hints. Very enjoyable.

Pours very dark brown with a large sudsy tan head. The aroma has caramel malt, syrupy sweetness, earthy yeast, some veggie and odd dry spices. Medium smooth lush body with underlying semi-soft carbonation. The flavor starts with sweet berries, earthy yeast, rich caramel malt that’s quite creamy, sweet anise and soda qualities. The finish is a bit sour and fruity. An okay, but fairly run of the mill BSA.

Bottle poured a cloudy brown with a large lasting amber head. Aromas of toffee, spice, light fig and raisin and a hint of vanilla. Palate was medium to full bodied and smooth. Flavors of toasted malt, cocoa, toffee and spice with a smooth malty finish.
