2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle @ The Dovetail, London.
Pours clear golden with a small, staying, frothy, white head. Small floaties, good amount of bubbles. Aroma has yeast, wheat, sweetness and some pine hops. Light mouthfeel. Flavour is sweet, some soft hoppiness and a little wheat and biscuity malts. Okay.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Clear golden with medium white short lasting head. Sweet yeasty aroma with fruity notes. Sweet malty flavor with ripe fruits, yeast and caramel notes. Not your typical lager luckyly.

2.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
Grainy apple aroma and flavor. Somewhat dusty with just a touch of hops, the apple dominates. Hopbitter aftertaste. Disappointing beer.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle at home in London. Phelps just took gold in the 4x200 freestyle relay - attaboy! Pours a perfectly clear yellow with a moderate, perfectly white foam head. Nose is completely dry cereal, hay and light dough. Light sweet flavor, some crispy, dry dough malts, light hay bitterness, hints of lemon pith, subtle corn flakes. Light bodied with lively carbonation. Crisp finish, not too sweet with some hay bitterness, bone dry dough, very mild cereal. It’s somewhat light in character, but what is there is very pleasant and the beer, overall, is quite refreshing. Good.

1.8 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 7/20
Bottled, 330ml from BEERmerchants. Gold with fizzed head. I wasn’t very keen on this one, a particularly sweet and artificial flavour, it felt like they were going for a fresh pine nut note and reached for the bleach. Dead yeasty notes. Not my thing at all.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle: Hazy & golden, big - "really whipped-cream-like" (slag = whipped cream) white head that very slowly collapses, slightly yeasty-phenolic and fruity, but mainly herbal-hoppy nose, some minerals detectable, too; sweet-bitter flavour, really soft; light herbal-hoppy and yeasty-malty finish. What a rarity: a tasty and well balanced Belgian Lager.....

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
330ml bottle (Belgian Cafe, Margate)
Sour aroma, sour taste too. However, the grains behind that are pretty tasty. Pleasantly light and bready. Crisp carbonation. Watery palate, but refreshing citrussy hops. Lemon. Don’t think it should be sour, really.

1.4 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 5/20
This stuff is terrible. The first surprise was that, when I poured it, it was distinctly cloudy and had lumps floating about in it. I wasn’t expecting that in a lager. The second surprise, and afar less welcome one was the really heavy diacetyl aroma. Coupled with soggy cardboard. Not so bad on the palate, although drinking it from a Duvel glass whilst holding my nose at the same time presented something of a physical challenge. Very cereally and far too sweet for a lager, with a raw malt background. Some hoppy bite coming through on the finish redeemed things marginally. At least many pale lagers are anodyne and inoffensive. This was positively unpleasant. I struggled to finish it. To be fair, it was past its best before date. 250ml bottle (thank God).

A Mes rate:
Draught at Bruxellensis. Lager looks. Drinkable and refreshing. Light bitterness and none of the expected cardboard. Surprised that I actually thought this was ok.

Comments: A pretty decent Belgian pils really, sweet as is the case with most of the country’s attempts, but still crisp, highly carbonated and well hopped.
