Ruby red in colour, this all malt ale is brewed from a combination of roasted barley malts and English aroma hops. Smooth in taste. The hopping is generous but not bitter and has a unique flavour that has become a trademark for Sleeman.

NOTE: Known as "Sleeman Original Dark 50* Amber Ale" in the US.

This has a very traditional English ale taste. It grows on you. The first one was fine, but not that impressive, then a few days later the next two I enjoyed much more. A day later the next one is even better. I don’t know why, perhaps its just a need to familiarize myself with what’s going on tastewise. Not that hoppy, not that malty, not that heavy, yet adequately hearty. Easy drinking, pleasant taste. Nice head, nice aroma, pleasant taste. Right about in the league of a decent ale from England. Not quite the quality of Samuel Smith (I don’t mean Samuel Adams), but they are pretty much at the top of the heap with the high price to go with it. Nevertheless, its up there with some of the better ones out of England.

Bottle 341ml. Pours clear brown/very deep amber with low light-beige head. Some lacing. Aroma is of caramel, malt. Taste is of caramel, malt, slight acidity, faint bitterness, sugar, hints of roasted malt, faint nuts, slight unpleasant aftertaste. Palate: Light body, medium-high carbonation. Overall: Not too bad, but very bland. Straight-forwardly uninteresting, and that aftertaste...

341 ml bottle @ Pier Seventeen Blind River. Pours a clear ruby red with a large beige head. Aromas are grass, hay, chalk and a little alcohol. Tastes are grain and caramel malts. Light bodied, medium carbonation with a very short finish. Pretty standard mass-produced stuff. ---Rated via Beer Buddy

Bottle with Pat, pours scotch brown with light head. Notes of caramel, toffee, bread, malt, dark fruit, and toast. Full body. Very sweet, good dessert beer if your a bum or something.

341 ml bottle from The Beer Store. Pours a clear amber-brown with tiny off-white cap that disappears quickly to nothing. Aroma is caramel and a light, dusty hoppiness. Flavour is slightly musty with syrupy caramel, sugary grains and a little tea-like bitterness. Average body; slughtly syrupy mouthfeel. Pretty forgettable.

Sweet grain and malt aroma. Clear dark orange color with a small white head. Sweet grain aroma throughout. Just a bad beer.

341ml bottle pours a pale amber color with a finger of white head that settles down to a few spots of lacing. Aroma is light caramel and mild hops. Taste is malty sweet with a bit of roast bitterness and a mild hoppy finish. Body is a little watery thin and carbonation is on the light side. Overall, this is not a very good beer.

Made me ill. Copper colour with a quick dissapearing white head. Not dark Metalic cardboard with honey and a harsh bitter nut alcohol finish. It hurt. Smells of cheap sweet suger and cardboard. No roast. Got flat very fast and gave me a long lasting gutrot. Don’t drink it.

Unfortunately other than its appearance and colour, I found this red to be somewhat disappointing. Expected more of an intense taste and aroma. Others do this better.

Wifes boss had a Christmas party. Yeah...... poured copper with 1 finger of head that disappeared before we could raise glasses for a toast. Sweet aroma, some malt, but little else. Tastes the same - nothing downright offensive but fairly boring. Sweet malt, that’s about it. Light body, not overly watery but very little character to it. I’d take it over most buck a beers, molbatt offerings or macro imports but it served to remind me why i switched to better beer.
