3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 pootzboy (1284) - Hawgville, Ontario, CANADA - JUL 23, 2005
UPDATED: JUL 31, 2005 I’m glad I had tasted a number of west coast steam beers before I got to this, as Oakes said, you’d never know what a real steam beer tasted like if this is all you had ever tasted....You’d think it was an all malt Sleeman lager with some light fruit tones and a sharper peppery-spice finish. The nose on this lager is steam-like with wisp of hop sharpmess over light malty sweetness. The beer pours with a good frothy, long-lasting cap that laces well. The amber-like color ( actually a dark gold) didn’t translate to the chewy maltier steam beers of the western states.......Sleeman made a fair commercial effort but really not enough chewy malts, spicey-fruity ale tastes , heavier body or color to classify as representative of the US style.
That said, this IS probably the best commercial beer from Sleeman..all malt and no typical "Sleeman skunk".

Tasty steam beer. I could drink a few of these if I had them. Some friends dropped by from Vancouver BC on their way back to Atlanta. They left one for me. I should of asked them to bring some Sweetwater 420 Ale from the ATL, one of my favorites!

Pale amber beer with a thick white head, fading quickly to nothing. Caramel aroma, pale malt and a bit of grassiness. Flavour is okay, caramel, malt, and a touch of hoppy bitterness. Slightly dusty with noticable steam beer characteristeristics.

341ml clear bottle. Amber orange beer with a nice rocky white cap. Fruity malt and mineral aroma. Good malt flavour for Sleeman’s, and also a hint of bitterness in the finish.

One of the better Sleeman offerings. The body is darker than the lager but the taste is quite similar but perhaps a little sweeter.

The orange colour is all that distinguishes this beer from other Sleemans products. It’s light in the body, with a slightly malty flavor and a minerally finish. There was some skunkiness as well due to the clear bottle.

An inviting amber colour with a touch of burgundy. The reserved nose shows mostly malt, but there’s a touch of milk chocolate in the background – overall quite rich. Much like the nose, the flavours are pretty laid back and, especially disappointing, none of the expected fruitiness associated with a steam beer. However, there’s a pleasant, silky palate and excellent balance between bitter hops and high-quality malt. Below expectations but a good brew nonetheless.

Light copper in colour. Aroma was light with some grain, malts, and skunk. Flavour was also quite light, some hops and some malt. Lightish body and a quick finish.
