One taste of this deep chocolate brown porter will explain why it won a silver medal at the 1998 Great American Beer Festival in Denver and continues to win the hearts of dark ale lovers everywhere. With a slightly hoppy aroma and a smooth, toasty malt character, Portage pairs well with food or stands alone as an exemplary sample of the robust porter style

From draft at Snow Goose in Anchorage. Looks like a porter. Minimal head. Mild aroma of chocolate grain. Taste is chocolate malts and sour. Somewhat cloying. Just ok.

on tap @ Snow Goose / Anchorage AK --- This review should be taken with a "grain of salt," because I suspect that either the lines werenít cleaned properly today, or the batch is beginning to turn. I looked over the other reviews and they have a consensus of impressions that donít sync with mine. For me, taste begins with semi-sweet malt that grows awkwardly into cedar and a bit of dark fruit, then abandons everything by completly shutting out hops in a finish that continually grows sweeter and more woody. Canít be what the brewer intentioned.

Draft: Poured a deep brown with blackened center and reddish orange tint to the edges. The head was off white to tan color. Aroma was nice chocolate and light coffee. Taste is dark chocolate with soft coffee and roasted malts that is robust at first but drinks rather smooth. Iím sure I could see myself drinking this all day and not worrying with the lower abv.

Growler from LaBodega. Dark reddish brown with a small tan head. Aroma of chocolate roasted coffee and caramel. Flavor is rich semi-sweet chocolate, roasty bitterness with no alcohol taste. Medium to full body with a smooth mouth feel. This is a solid porter, lots of chocolate, some roast and goes down easy.

[Tap] Tried this at the brewpub in mid-September. Pours a very dark brown color with a light brown colored head. Nose is of dark roasted malts, mild mocha notes and a general charred character. The taste is very similar, with some brown sugar, cold coffee and mild anise. Light sweet vanilla bean notes come out as this beer warms. Decent body. A pretty decent brew.
