3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 SHIG (3045) - Anchorage, Alaska, USA - JUL 2, 2012
Draft: Poured a deep brown with blackened center and reddish orange tint to the edges. The head was off white to tan color. Aroma was nice chocolate and light coffee. Taste is dark chocolate with soft coffee and roasted malts that is robust at first but drinks rather smooth. I’m sure I could see myself drinking this all day and not worrying with the lower abv.

Growler from LaBodega. Dark reddish brown with a small tan head. Aroma of chocolate roasted coffee and caramel. Flavor is rich semi-sweet chocolate, roasty bitterness with no alcohol taste. Medium to full body with a smooth mouth feel. This is a solid porter, lots of chocolate, some roast and goes down easy.

[Tap] Tried this at the brewpub in mid-September. Pours a very dark brown color with a light brown colored head. Nose is of dark roasted malts, mild mocha notes and a general charred character. The taste is very similar, with some brown sugar, cold coffee and mild anise. Light sweet vanilla bean notes come out as this beer warms. Decent body. A pretty decent brew.

Draft at brewery: One of my favorites from Sleeping Lady. Still a bit sweet for me, like many others from this brewery, but it wasn’t too bad. Enjoyed the soft roast, dark chocolate and creamed and sugared espresso qualities. Zingy hops in the middle were nice, too.
