3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Deep dark brown coloured body with a little lighter brown toward the bottom, all with a luscious and thick four centimetre tall rich brown head that leaves a pretty ugly lace. Aroma of roasted malt, yeast, alcohol, metal, grapefruit and slightly astringent hops. Medium-bodied; Assertive alcohol and metal up front with a large yeast kick, some grapefruit and piney flavours and a lot of roastiness to battle through. Aftertaste shows a defined malty and grapefruit flavour with some metal and roasty harshness on the end. Overall, almost exactly what the label says - a belgian yeast-forward black IPA, which in itself is fairly complex, and this is pretty much exactly that, but the problem is the ’style’ itself is a bit hard to define, so this one is a fault of perhaps trying too much. Not a bad offering, but not great - either a Black IPA or Belgian IPA would be better, not both. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from K&E Discount Beverage in New Paltz, New York on 14-June-2014 for US$7,99 sampled at home in Washington on 11-March-2015.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle care of Leighton. It opaque dark brown with a small beige head. The nose is sweet, juicy, oily orange oil, sherbet, stewed tangerine, chocolate and Terry’s chocolate orange. The taste is crisp, bitter roast, toasty, liquorice, earth, pithy orange citrus, ashy, charred wood, chocolate and light vanilla with a smooth finish. Medium+ body and moderate carbonation. Not as " hoppy" as I expected from a black ipa, but decent anyhow.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Nice floral hop aroma with nice roasted dark malt aroma. Flavor is malty with some coffee flavors. Dry finish. Not sweet. Hop balance is nice, but hop flavors are dominated by the roasted malt/coffee flavors. Nice beer!

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
22 oz.. bottle. Pours black with a moderate-large tan head that lasted through the first quarter of the glass and left partial lace. Pleasant aroma of spicy Belgian yeast. Not really getting any citrus. Some mild roast in the nose as well. The flavor is frankly odd as does not resemble an IPA in any form. Ample spice which I am assuming is coming from the Belgian yeast strain they used. There is no citrus whatsoever, despite all of the "C" hops they used. A bit of molasses in there. Mild bitterness at the finish. Medium bodied. Not something I would look to try again.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Location: 22 oz bottle from The Hop, 10/11/13
Aroma: The nose is a nice mix of resin and roast, some fruity notes, and a bit of spice
Appearance: It pours a dark brown color, with a reddish hue, small beige head, and light lace
Flavor: The taste has a medium-plus bitterness, light spice, and plenty of balancing roast
Palate: The body is medium, with a soft carbonation, smooth feel, and a dry finish
This one is a pretty nice Black IPA. The components you’d want in this style are all here, and all work solidly together. It’s not an absolute standout, but it is a more than solid beer.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
I determined that I should try the Black IPA style once again to see if I could try to like it. Pours a medium brown black with slate tones. Thin puddled head. Some thin lacing. Again I find this style to be muddled and unclear about itself. A swirling morass of unbalance. It reminds me of the contents of a suitcase after 11 days on the road. Funky. All the pieces are there, and yes, its beer, but crisp hops and darkness just dont seem to get along. Kind of like souvenirs wrapped in dirty clothes.
