Aroma: wow, musty, blackberry, powerful yeast, apfelstrudel-malty-sweet, some oak & coconut... pretty complex. Reminiscent of a barley wine. Seville orange & coriander.
Flavour: porridge & raisins, pretty bland for 9% (good though)... Good malty-hoppy bitterness & sweet, syrupy backbone. Somewhere between a barleywine & a Belgian ale?
Appearance: turbid, dirty deep orange with yellower rind & bubbly, irregular, marshy head. Grains at the bottom.
Palate: very good, oily & smooth like a great barleywine. Noble. Some fizzy and completely adequate co2 lurking in the creamy body.
Add. notes: slightly oxidized. The maturation process seems to have gone well. Ljunkan (107), Karlstad, Sweden Jul 12, 2008 Bottle, 2007. Oh, smells very belgian. Taste is fruity with raisins, dried plums and some spiciness. Quite sweet, as expected. Finishes with some warming alcohol. Joakgust (60), Stockholm, Sweden Jul 2, 2008 All three bottles 2005-2007, 33 cl -
2005 - Burgundy colored beer with hints of dried prunes and some coconut in both flavor and aroma. More of a Dubbel than Quadrupel. 3.6
2006 - Amber beer with weaker notes of dried fruits in aroma and flavor. 3.2
2007 - Amber beer with notes of apples and ripe fruit in the aroma and flavor. Hints of chocolate in the flavor. 3.8
2007 was really the best. Feels like the recipe was rather different in all cases. 2005 was most rich in aroma, but flavor was best in 2007. 2006 seemed to be a bit of a miss in comparison.
WeeHeavySD (1564), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA Jun 29, 2008 2005 Vintage squat bottle a bonus from Papsoe. Thanks Henrik. Pours a cloudy orangey brown, with a half finger tan ring, with a nice sea monster in the islands in the center. Nice fragrant big nose. Sweet rasains hidden alc, overall pretty decent at least compared to the last two dp I opened. gnoff (2540), Göteborg, Sweden Jun 22, 2008 Vertical testing on June 14, 2008. Tried the 2005, 2006 and 2007 side bu side. (Also the 2002, separate rating) Thanks to deft to arrange the purchase from Systembolaget of these three (and to rlgk for the 2002)
2005 - (33 cl bottle, BB 150921 - that would be 2015) Shady copper to brown color, light brown head. Sweet malty, vinous, raissin and alcohol scent. Sweet, licorice, raissin, malty, caramel, earth tones taste, very nice. Smooth mouthfeel with rather low co2 level. Low to medium bitterness. Sweet and raissin with caramel aftertaste. 8/3/8/4/15=3.8
2006 - (33 cl bottle, BB 13 okt 16) Slight shady copper to brown color, rather smallish tan head. Sweet, fruity, malty, raissinish, chocolate, alcohol scent, also grainy. Sweet, sugary, malty, raissin taste. Medium to smooth mouthfeel, low bitterness. 7/3/7/3/14=3.4
2007 - (33 cl bottle, BB W11 - 2008) I don’t like the new label, wish they would have stuck with the old one Clea rcopper color, medium big tan lasting head. Sweet, estery, phenolic scent. Banana, clove, sweet sugary as well. Sweet, spicy, clove, phenolic, medicinal, smoke and bitter taste. Thick smooth mouthfeel, medium to low bitterness. Warming mouthfeel. Sweet aftertaste. 6/4/7/4/13=3.4
When mixing the three in the same glass - Metallic scent! also sweet. Sweet phenolic taste. Medium mouthfeel and bitterness. Sweet raissin aftertaste. 5/3/6/4/12=3.0
It seems to improve with some aging, though the 2007 I’m a bit sceptical that it will get as good as the 2005. Also: Don’t mix them! Better to try them side by side.
All in all, I think the 2005 aged about 3-4 years is the best of these, so my rating scores will reflect that as well.
