4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Location: Bottle at Paul’s Blind Impy Stout Tasting, 1/5/13, 2006 Bottle
Aroma: The aroma had some bread and caramel, a little dark fruit, and mild chocolate
Appearance: A dark brown colored beer with a larger sized, fizzy brown head
Flavor: The taste is more of the same, on the sweet side, but nit cloyingly so
Palate: The body on the lighter side considering the style, with a creamy feel and minimal heat
Drank this blind. This was kind of an un-stout like stout, and I can’t really explain why I enjoyed it, but something about it really worked.

Slottskällans 11% imperial stout looks good: ebony black, thin but long head is creamy beige and leaves lacing. Medium strong aroma has sweet roasted malt, licorice, coffee, herbs. Feels warm and soft in mouth, alcohol is there but warming not burning, full body, dry and roasted slightly bitter, tasty finish is long and bitter, herbs, ripe dark fruits. Nice winterwarmer.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
’09 bottle from Blake - thanks! Somewhat transparent darker color with a light slick of tan foam. Aroma suggests darker, sweet malt and fruit but it’s actually dense, bitter chocolate and roasted malt faded by age. Taste is dry, precise, heavily roasted chocolate with a clean bitterness through the finish. Very enjoyable beer that has done well with three years on the bottle.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Black coloured beer with a tan head. Aroma of roasted malts with elements of chocolate and some sourness, and maybe some liquorice. Taste of roasted malts, dark chocolate, some vinous sourness and some sweet tastes and some dried red fruits. Smooth medium-full body. A very good beer, but not the best (by style).

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
12 ounce bottle poured a thin black color, aromas of light roast, coffee, light floral hops, chocolate, and a touch of earth. Flavors are the same, thin on palate for a stout, I like mine chewy, but still a very solid beer overall. Did not taste like the 9% on the bottle.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
In short: An roasted and well hopped big stout. Straightforward but expertly executed. Excellent
How: Bottle 330ml, 2011 vintage, consumed the day of purchase
The look: Black body topped by a medium tan head with medium retention
In long: Nose has a nice roasty character with light notes of raisins and a pleasant scent of herbal hops. Basic inviting aroma. Taste is pretty straightforward, hefty amount of highly roasted cereals, a light coffee beans sensation, usual notes of bittersweet black chocolate, light notes of raisins, burnt caramel as it warms up, a good amount of hops with a herbal and green pine needles character. The high roast level and herbal/piney bitterness create a relatively dry finish. Body is full and the carbonation level is just high enough to help drinkability without being aggressive. This beer doesn’t re-invent the wheel, this is pretty much an archetypical example of the modern impy stout, but it is tasty, expertly made and with a high drinkability. Way above average for the style. It is because of beers like this one that I feel bad for people who didn’t grow up in a dysfunctional family like I did and now do not use every opportunity they have to get drunk.
