COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Flagraiser IPA is a big, hoppy tribute to the unfurling of the Grand Union flag atop Prospect Hill in Somerville, MA on January 1, 1776. This ale celebrates our passion for hop aroma and flavor balanced with just the right amount of malt. Huge aroma and resin-y flavors from the elusive Galaxy hops are the signature of this beer. Built on a solid base of pale malts, this double IPA makes generous use of hops from Columbus, Crystal and Galaxy with the Galaxy hops taking the lead during ten days of aggressive dry-hopping.

Pine and resin aroma. Hazy brown body with a off-white inch thick head which laces the glass handsomely. Bold rich bitterness is balanced with slight sweetened malt. Smooth with a nice warming sensation on the palate. Rich smooth finish. Drinkable and enjoyable.

Pours a very hazy and very dark golden orange with a frothy two finger white head that very slowly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Nice retention with streaks of soapy lacing left behind. A little dark for the style but otherwise looks pretty good. Slightly earthy, tropical fruit hops aroma with a grainy, sweet caramel malt backbone. Grassy with resinous oils and pine needle character along with hints of grapefruit, blood orange and pineapple. Smells decent but the malt character is strong than I prefer with lots of caramel, toffee, leather and biscuit. On the fuller end of medium bodied with a huge sweet malt presence that almost completely overpowers all of the hop flavor. Dry and bitter up front with some earthy pine needle and sticky hop oils but this is nearly cancelled out by the strong malt flavors. Slightly leathery with a lot of caramel sweetness along with hints of toffee, rye, biscuit, hazelnut and dark fruit. There’s some subtle boozy heat/sweetness in the finish but overall the ABV is well masked. Overall, this beer is way too malty for the style and doesn’t even taste like an IPA in my opinion. Feels more like a weak barleywine than anything else.

Pours a two-finger cream head that fades slowly leaving a good lace. Hazy pale amber color. Light-medium carbonation and medium bodied. Nose is light grapefruit and pine hops, flavor is caramel and grapefruit hops, light bitter aftertaste. $2.99 for a 12oz bottle from Julio’s Liquors Westborough, Ma.

12 oz. Clear burnt orange with a film of cream. Aroma is earthy caramel, lightly spicy citrus and touches of cherry and dried wood. Flavors of orange toffee, dried wood and sherry. Medium-heavy body has medium carbonation and a nice balance. Seems a bit boozy for 7.5%.

Bottle. Slightly hazy orange pour with a white head. Aroma and taste of guava and resin, but there’s a little unwelcome caramel/toffee in here too that I could live without. Close to being very good.

Backlog rating on 8-23-2012 (Bottled on 05-2012) The appearance of this beer is a medium sized off-white head with a long retention, slightly hazy golden body, very fizzy, fast rising carbonation, and one ring of lacing. The aroma is pine hops and pine hops. The flavor is pine hops, bitter, caramel malt, and a semi-dry finish. The mouthfeel is moderate carbonation and this beer is medium bodied. For the style, this beer is not very hoppy tasting which makes it very quaffable for non-hopheads and worth trying.
