Dickinsonbeer (2466), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA Mar 27, 2008 bomber- pours a dep dark hazy amber with a thin head- and only some spotty light lace. Aroma is very sharp with harsh dark crystal or special b malts, but also a very fake sugary sweetness- kinda like splenda, but also like a dark grape sugary canrdy- maybe a red smartie and a grape spree aroma going on- yeah deifnite grapiness goin on- grape soda even- probably the first I have ever smelled this characcter in a beer. Flavor is simlar- I get grapesode and cola- if you mixed them- more artificial sweetneers and rediculous candies like smarties and maybe those runts candies- some more hsarp dark stewed malts. Light carbonation, but stil a sharpness in there to throw things off. i used to drink this on tap and thought it to be a decent to good scotch ale- now that it is bottled, it is pretty messed up and not very enjoyable. Meh.
joekinty (154), rockledge, Florida, USA Jun 30, 2008 thick bodied pour with a small head that fades quickly nice soft fruit aromas sherry and chocolate very very slight pet flavor yet nice complexities great brew be careful very easy drinker at nearly 8% Heathen (455), Riverside, New Jersey, USA Jun 20, 2008 THOUGHTS: Finally a Sly Fox I really liked. I know people who swear by them, but I just don’t usually get it. But I did with this one. I’t not great, but really nice. A very nice Scotch ale. Flavor is nice but drops off a lot in the finish. It’s sort of like Skullsplitter, but not quite as good. I like the smokiness because it isn’t overpowering, but I wish it wasn’t there to be truer to the original Scottish style.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, dark, brownish red with a small to average, off-white head that mostly diminished. The aroma was moderate to heavy caramel malt, apple, cherry and slight smoke. The initial flavor was moderately sweet and lightly acidic; while the finish was heavily sweet, lightly acidic and moderately bitter with an average duration. There was lots of caramel malt with a little smoke to it and some apple and cherry with a little smokey bitterness at the end. The medium body was sort of syrupy then dry with fizzy carbonation and a light astringent, light alcoholic and metallic finish. waolsen (917), Littleton, Colorado, USA Jun 17, 2008 bottle. dark cranberry/brown pour with very thin head. sweet fruit, nutty, peppermint, floral aroma. rich, smokey, woody malts. . sweet molasses. earthy. coffee undertones. Dorwart (1588), Robbinsville, New Jersey, USA May 27, 2008 Thin head which dissappeared really quickly. Minimal carbonation. Soft peat and sickly sweet aroma with some dark fruit and molasses. Kind of lies there lifeless. Dark ruby brown in color. Malty flavor with a hint of smoke. Sticky palate although this brew is getting better as it warms. Some nutty overtones and a bit of plums. Finishes pasty and earthy. An ok scotch ale.
