Grisette is a Belgian style ale which was originally brewed in the Hainaut province to be the beer of the miners in the area, just as Saison was the beer of the farmers. It was lighter than Saison and frequently contained wheat as well as barley malt (as does the Sly Fox version). The name is derived from the French word for "gray," referring to both the drab factory frocks worn by the young women (the grisettes) who doled out pints as the men exited from the mines, and also the color of the cobblestone rock being mined.

Very drinkable, can’t taste the 5.6% alcohol one bit, tastes like a nice refreshing summer ale, very grassy, hayey, and it goes down real nice and easy

Tap at Blind Tiger in NYC. Murky, glowing yellow like witbier/hefeweizen. Thin, white head. Nose is hefeweizen esters- bananas and yellow apple cidery off character.. Taste is hefeweizen in taste with some hefty tartness. Moves to yellow apples...cidery overall. Not sure what happened here, but poor yeast choice. Sour, cidery, estery. Not great saison characters.

Draft. Pours hazy golden yellow with a white head. Wheaty aroma with some light lemony notes. The flavor is clean and wheaty, with some straw-like notes and light lemony citric notes. Outrageously drinkable.

tap at RnH - Hazy yellow. Light funk caramel. Sort of watery. Medium body . Spritzy carb. Finish is dry with some sulfur. As far as I know, this is supposed to be like a light saison and that’s exactly what it tastes like. Perhaps the abv is even a little high for the style, but it works for me!

Location: Draft at RnH, 8/26/11

Aroma: The nose is mostly yeast, lemon/citrus, and wheat
Appearance: This one pours a golden color with a white head
Flavor: The taste is similar, wheaty and citrusy, spice, clove, and grass
Palate: The body is fairly light, a lively mouthfeel, and reasonably drinkable
Overall Impression: This was some solid stuff. This one is pretty refreshing, with a decent mouthfeel. Not a bad beer at all.

On tap at the Ithaca Alehouse. Pours a hazed golden yellow with a medium sized white head which falls off quickly. Estery yeast, wheat, crisp and clean. Medium bodied, sweet but very lightly, banana, wheat, but it empties out a bit. Wheat, yeast, banana and more esters on the finish. Very easy drinking.

On tap, Royersford. Pours a hazy yellow body with a small frothy white head that retained as a thin film. The nose is spicy and yeasty with some lemon zest and earthy wheat. The flavor is quite spicy but the yeastiness helps soften it out and balance it. A little peppercorn spice on the back end. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, softened a bit by the yeast with nice soft fizzy carbonation. Pretty decent beer.

UPDATED: AUG 15, 2013 Rerate 8/13: bumping a few things up. Not sure if they’ve changed anything but I had this again last night and really enjoyed it. Much more lively, very nice in wide glass, leaving an appetizing, very belgian-y filmy head and was very round in the mouth. Good, earthy, slightly herbal and bready, but not overly spicy. Nicely pairs with lighter fare or salad.
