Grisette is a Belgian style ale which was originally brewed in the Hainaut province to be the beer of the miners in the area, just as Saison was the beer of the farmers. It was lighter than Saison and frequently contained wheat as well as barley malt (as does the Sly Fox version). The name is derived from the French word for "gray," referring to both the drab factory frocks worn by the young women (the grisettes) who doled out pints as the men exited from the mines, and also the color of the cobblestone rock being mined.

12oz can from Pinnochio’s. Pours a crystal clear, pale yellow color with a white head. Aroma is yeasty, clove, grass. Medium on the palate with average carbonation. Flavor is sweet, malty, bread, hay, a little nutty, some grassy hops, with a clean, clove finish. Very drinkable.

Can shared at Chriso’s post GBBF minidig, 16/08/14. Lightly hazed pale golden with a well appointed white covering of bubbles. Nose is straw, light citrics, freshly cut grass, pale maltings. Taste comprises tangy citric peel, straw, light spice. Medium bodied, fine carboantion, tangy fruit rinse in the close. Fairly simple saison but tasty enough and a decent level of refreshment is delivered.

From 12oz can. Hazy white with really nice rocky white head. Musty spicy nose. Crisp spice, malt undertone, well balanced palate. Well done by a fine PA brewer.

This was poured from a can at home in a tulip glass. It has a lemony and herbal aroma, reminiscent of Brooklyn’s Sorachi Ace. Pours hazy gold with a nice head. Light sweetness with mild bitterness coupled with light sourness such as one would expect from a Farmhouse ale are present. A bit dry and has a bitter finish. Overall, this is a very nice beer that I will definitely buy again.

Nice saison, or grissette, or whatever we’re calling these hay and citrus farm ales these days. Pours cloudy golden with great head and lacing. Light floral yeast. Hay and citrus indeed. Light sour finish and note of funk. Tap at Black Squirrel.

Draft at Good Dog. Tulip. Poured a very cloudy golden yellow. Large frothy bright white head. Bright citrusy IPA. Not too challenging, but not bad. Lemon zest and seeds. Green bananas. Pears. Kiwi. Pineapple. Peppers. Minimal malt. Strong carbonation. Nice spicy/sour hop bite. Semi-dry finish. Better than expected.
