Grisette is a Belgian style ale which was originally brewed in the Hainaut province to be the beer of the miners in the area, just as Saison was the beer of the farmers. It was lighter than Saison and frequently contained wheat as well as barley malt (as does the Sly Fox version). The name is derived from the French word for "gray," referring to both the drab factory frocks worn by the young women (the grisettes) who doled out pints as the men exited from the mines, and also the color of the cobblestone rock being mined.

Nice saison, or grissette, or whatever we’re calling these hay and citrus farm ales these days. Pours cloudy golden with great head and lacing. Light floral yeast. Hay and citrus indeed. Light sour finish and note of funk. Tap at Black Squirrel.

Draft at Good Dog. Tulip. Poured a very cloudy golden yellow. Large frothy bright white head. Bright citrusy IPA. Not too challenging, but not bad. Lemon zest and seeds. Green bananas. Pears. Kiwi. Pineapple. Peppers. Minimal malt. Strong carbonation. Nice spicy/sour hop bite. Semi-dry finish. Better than expected.

A nice, easy drinking beer with a little bit of richness to round it out. Fruity, slightly nutty, with a light spiciness to make things interesting.

Golden body with a finger of foam. Aroma of malt, some honey, maybe some spice. Malty flavor, a tiny hint of caramel and some spice. Nothing extraordinary but refreshing and light.

12oz can. From Perfect Pour? Probably, but I don’t remember. Mostly clear, mildly hazy yellow color. Pours with a bigger foamy 2-finger white head, initially, but fades to minimal eventually, leaving only loose lace. Banana, spice in the nose. Some belgian yeast, good citrus. Medium to bigger body. Kind of slick texture. Kind of soft, light to moderate carbonation. Moderate sweet, moderate spiciness. Light bitterness. Alright, zesty belgian ale.

Can: Thanks, Chris. Pale & clear, the color of an unripe pear with a chunky, big-bubbled white head that takes a long time to recede by any appreciable amount. Mild cereal grain aroma with a nice, underlying tart apple & pear skin element. Just a touch of Belgian-y yeast, hinting at mild bubblegum & spice. Taste is crisp & also more yeast-heavy than the aroma; lots of apparent Belgian yeast, clove, bubblegum, leading into a mid-palate bitterness in the form of earthy & mildly musky hops. Moderate notes of apple skin & white grape give off a slight tartness but nothing extreme; earth-laden, faintly astringent finish, dry & crisp. Nothing to lose your head over, but still a nice, drinkable Belgian influenced brew. Working Class Ale is a good way to classify it.

0.355l can brought home from Mikkeller & Friends. A huge frothy good looking fluffy white head on this one, lots of lacework and the body is light cloudy with a mix of golden, orange and straw yellow. Smells nice. Fruity nectar sweetness with melon, straws, some subtle yeast and wheat. Highly enjoyable. Refreshing easy to drink flavors. Again that nectarty fruit sweetness from melon and fruits, i get a little sharp bitterness, almost grassy and stingy. A faint lemony touch is making the whole thing a little bit more interesting. Yeast with pepper and wheat lingering in the finish. I didn’t know it, but I really needed a beer now, and this definitely did the trick! 25.01.2014
