3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Steeeve (303) - Ambler, Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 4, 2011
On tap at Bock Fest. Very dark brown pour with a fluffy inch or so of mocha colored head. Aroma has some strong notes of dark fruits, definitely plums. Also ripe with typical doppelbock scents, toffee, caramel, nuts, roast. Flavor has pretty much all the same characteristics of the aroma. A hint of chocolate, definitely on the sweet side, a vague suggestion of raisins on the finish. Not any alcohol flavor or burn that I could discern, even as it warmed close to room temperature. Clean, full bodied beer that flows down surprisingly easily. Awesome beer. Makes me wish they had a bock fest every week.

Bottle from kramer in trade. Dark brown, mahogany edges, huge off white head, slightly overcarbonated. Peat/smoke up front in aroma, big fruity esters, caramel backbone. Flavor much the same. Caramel and smoke front and center, fruit character has died out. Finishes hot, big turn off. Rather thin palate/mouthfeel.

Immediate carbonation explosion upon opening. Poured dirty brown. Aroma is rotten vegetable soup. Taste is sour malt and vegetable. May have been a defective bottle.

Tap at Barcade: Deep brown rusty copper pour with a thin tan ring of head. Toasted softly sweet aroma with some raisin and dark caramel. Rounded creamy body with a malty and sweet yet rounded flavor. The raisiny caramel fore is balanced by a long toasted finish accompanied by mild peppery noble hop notes. A solid interpretation of the style.
3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Drake (4797) - Charlottesville, Virginia, USA - JUL 16, 2009
22 ounce bottle from New Beer Distributors in Manhattan. Pours a dark ruby red color with a medium head. Average head retention and lacing. I find the aroma to be quite odd... prunes, raisins, soap, caramel. Taste is dark fruits, toffee, bread, anise. Smooth, medium bodied. This one is pretty much all over the place, but still fairly decent.
