This Russian Imperial Stout was poured for the first time as part of our 12/14/12 Anniversary celebration in Phoenixville as a draught only release. It is a full bodied beer with a rich, roasty malt character and subtle alcohol warmth.

Lovely in color and foams well. Had chilled so no aroma at first but may have come later, but my nose was tainted by then. Not overwhelming in flavor but true to style. Rich tobacco hints hit the palate. I would get again.

This beer has a beautiful thick, foamy head with great lacing, sitting atop an oil slick looking beer. Very rich and warming although the flavors are not as well integrated as in other RIS. Still, a very good beer.

UPDATED: AUG 16, 2014 Sampled from a 750 ml corked brown bottle this beer poured thick, black and a bit oily with an enormous foamy brown head that lingered forever and left great lacing. The aroma was chocolate, marzipan, bread dough, fruity hops and licorice. The flavor was bitter with strong fruity and floral hops, anise, cherry and cocoa. Long finish. Moderately full bodied. Solid.

750mL, corked and caged. Nose is of rich mocha and dark luscious dark chocolate, surprisingly fruity. Pitch pour with a dense but soapy light brown head. Taste lightly sweet with hefty alcohol, touch of soy but not too much, dark chocolate and slightly above-average roast, some fruitiness, faint ash. Bitterness there but itís slight compared to the sweetness, which itself isnít overdone. Very lightly salty. Full body a touch too airy for my liking, aftertaste nice and warm, the alcohol is present but not rude. Some mineral and Belgian/Foreign Stout character, dries out somewhat and allows the bitterness and hops to shine in the finish. This one all about pulling back the reins.

Pitch black with a tiny brown head from tap. Has a nutty smell. Taste of toasted nuts and chocolate. Very light alcohol taste. Light and barely carbonated mouthfeel

Bottle - 750mL corked and caged from the Rare Beer Club. Black pour with a tall, dense, fluffy mocha colored head. Aroma is roasted malt, vanilla, burnt caramel, coffee and dark chocolate. Lots of roasted malt, dark, oily coffee, dark bittersweet chocolate, burnt caramel, vanilla and molasses. Body is medium-full and sticky with a strong, bubbly carbonation. Mild alcoholic warmth as well. Finishes with more roasted malt, vanilla, caramel, molasses, dark chocolate and espresso. Tasty!

Some roast malt and chocolate. Palate is a little thin for style, but ok. Finishes with mild bitterness. Soft carbonation. Tap at Churchkey.

Bottle from RBC. Pours opaque deep brown with mocha head that explodes and then completely disappears. Aroma: Rich dark chocolate with a fair bit of roast as well. Taste: Initially thereís a metallic finish, but that comes and goes as it warms. Chocolate and roast both big in the taste, along with cola and a bit of earth. Slight astringency in finish. Cola, marshmallows -- this actually seems to go downhill as it warms. When I started, I thought "wow, there are a lot of harsh reviews of this -- doesnít seem that bad to me." And it still doesnít seem that bad, but at the current rate it might get there by the end of the 750. At any rate, Iím cutting this off now.
