DocLock (4170), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 23, 2006 Draft in Phoenixville. This one poured clear deep copper/orange with little head. The aroma was very hoppy, with some heat and fruit noted, in addition to some fruity cherry bourbon wafts. The taste had a firm malt presence backed by big hops and subdued fruit. I like a little more dark fruitiness to my barleywines. The finish got a little hot, and the hops kept on coming as it warmed. This one reminded me a little of Avery Hog Heaven. As a side note, I did side-by-sides of this and the Odyssey, and this one made Odyssey its bitch in the IBU department. If this were an IIPA, I’d raise the score by a tenth or two. obxdude10 (1390), Reading, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 20, 2006 Excllent barleywine, amber color with a touch of a reddish hue, off-white head with nice lacing around the glass, the aroma was full of hops and notes of citrus, caramel & a hint of fruitiness, full-bodied but easily drinkable, flavors were very well balanced with notes of fruity & earthy hops and caramel & musty malts, just a small hint of alocohol in the body as well, smooth finish with one last touch of hops
javathehop (14), Pennsylvania, USA Aug 9, 2007 Updated: Aug 20, 2007their was a great balance between extreme malt sweetness and extreme hop bitterness though every sip, the sweetness on it’s own would be too much, but ton’s of hops just make it so much more. this is definitely not for the calorie counters, not that you should be worrying about that while enjoying any good beer. wnhay (722), Princeton, New Jersey, USA Feb 9, 2006 Sampled on tap. Poured dark copper with a thin tan head. Aroma had pinapple, cherry, caramel, courant and bourbon. I found the taste more malty then other people did apparently. I liked it because of the smoothness. The alcohol was very well hidden. Palate burned because of the alcohol but that didn’t bother me. weeare138 (924), Collegeville, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 22, 2006 Much thanks to egajdzis for this hand bottled treat off his kegerator. The barleywine keg has been aged in his cellar since January...
Appears a crimson toned haze of amber with a fluffy white cap that fades into a collar. Spotty lacing is left around the glass.
Smell is of heavy malt, alcohol, roasted nuts, peanut brittle, cream, ripe black plums, peach, vanilla, caramel, toasted barley with some traces of solvent, over ripened cherries, and doughy yeast.
Taste is of complex flavors that overwhelm the palate...perhaps a bit too much to handle. This still seems a tad too hot despite the aging.
Mouthfeel is full bodied, sweet up front, with a caramel, vanilla, and fruitiness clinging to every nook and cranny of the mouth with nice carbonation highlighted by earthy, piney hops. Mildly hot with alcohol and tough to handle as a sweet, sticky brew.
Drinkability is decent, delicious, creamy, fruity, yeasty, malty, nutty, with the abv packing a punch. It’s just a bit hard to drink. Well done but the abv is the abrassive factor with this one.
