Mini-growler from Half-Time. Pours a deep dark black with a medium sized dense light tan head. A little boozy on the nose to start, but backed up with a lovely smoked malt presence. Thin to medium body, light sweetness, a touch of smoke, and again, the faintest touch of alcohol. Finishes with a good amount of smoke, a light bitterness, and again, more alcohol. Still pretty solid, and the alcohol presence doesn’t distract much.
JoeMcPhee (4544), Jackson Heights, New York, USA May 29, 2009 Tap at Barcade. Deep brown beer with a thin tan head. Aroma is lightly sticky. Some chewy, fruity character. A bit of soft fruity, tobacco and an earthy character. Lots of tobacco and an interesting earthiness. There is a touch of light smoke but also a strange vegetal character that doesn’t really work for me. puzzl (2339), New York, New York, USA May 19, 2009 Tap at Barcade. Roasty sweet, wet chocolate aroma, with some peanuty malt notes. Cocoa powder and an ugly, tar-y kind of curry flavor. No good. Not very porter like. PilsnerPeter (2162), Flushing, New York, USA May 17, 2009 Tap at Barcade: Deep brown with a light tan ring of head. Porterish aroma, but it’s covered by lots of vanilla. Some smooth roast roast, almost coffeeish with dark crystal notes. Silky palate. Sweet for a porter- chocolaty with nutty with dark crystal and quite a bit of vanilla for a porter. It would be a solid amped up porter if it didn’t have that vanilla/maltose residual sugar character. Dorwart (1758), Robbinsville, New Jersey, USA Nov 12, 2007 Thin head with light carbonation. Interesting aroma. Big pumpkin presence, squash, some smoke and some sweet malts. Big smokey flavor along with some more pumpkin, roasted grains and carbon. Medium bodied. Sticky mouthfeel. A bit dry and thins as it warms. I am not overly impressed. kp (7177), Woodstock, Georgia, USA Sep 1, 2007 Name: Promethus

CaptainCougar (5235), Rockville, Maryland, USA Jul 14, 2006 Growler shared by egajdzis at DL06: Lightly carbonated transparent copper mahogany pour has a thin ring of tan head. Rich sweet caramel and dark fruity aroma has a touch of butterscotch and good complexity. Body begins with sweet toasty caramel and butterscotch flavor, nicely-balanced with good, mild piney hops and a hint of smoke before a bittersweet dark chocolatey finish. A very nice porter with good complexity. eaglefan538 (2268), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Jun 5, 2006 A very nice dark brown to black appearance with mahogany edges and a nice head. Lacing was only momentary and followed the surface as it was consumed. The aroma was smoky and I couldn’t pick much else up (hey, this is called the fire bringer, after all). The flavor was certainly smoky, somewhat like a rauchbier, but there were also roasted malts, light coffee, and alcohol present (it almost wanted to be vinous, rather than a coffee/chocolate overdosed stout/porter). The mouthfeel was heavy, but the consistency wasn’t like motor oil, just heavy on flavor and fullness. I enjoyed this one, as it didn’t overpower with the smoked-ness.
