Big pumpkin presence, squash, some smoke and some sweet malts. Big smokey flavor along with some more pumpkin, roasted grains and carbon. Medium bodied. Sticky mouthfeel. A bit dry and thins as it warms. I am not overly impressed. kp (8399), Woodstock, Georgia, USA

Rich sweet caramel and dark fruity aroma has a touch of butterscotch and good complexity. Body begins with sweet toasty caramel and butterscotch flavor, nicely-balanced with good, mild piney hops and a hint of smoke before a bittersweet dark chocolatey finish. A very nice porter with good complexity. eaglefan538 (2360), Wilmington, Delaware, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jun 5, 2006 A very nice dark brown to black appearance with mahogany edges and a nice head. Lacing was only momentary and followed the surface as it was consumed. The aroma was smoky and I couldn’t pick much else up (hey, this is called the fire bringer, after all). The flavor was certainly smoky, somewhat like a rauchbier, but there were also roasted malts, light coffee, and alcohol present (it almost wanted to be vinous, rather than a coffee/chocolate overdosed stout/porter). The mouthfeel was heavy, but the consistency wasn’t like motor oil, just heavy on flavor and fullness. I enjoyed this one, as it didn’t overpower with the smoked-ness. goldtwins (4080), Nesconset, New York, USA

Aroma starts with a diacetyl buttersctoch. Chocolate and caramel tried to show through in the aroma but it was having a touch time. The flavor was fairly sweet with sugar and dark fruits dominating. They do put their beers in some nice bottles. BBB63 (4228), La Porte, Indiana, USA

The aroma has notes of smoke, roasted peanuts, chocolate, classic British bitters, and a note of diacetyl.
The taste is too sweet and cloy for it’s own good. Covers up what lovely smoked peat character is suppose to be it’s prominent feature. There is some acidic bite and bitterness on the finish but is a little too late. The feel is smooth yet twangy.
Get rid of that buttery sweetness and this could be one rocking brew but for now a major disappointment. TAR (2091), Boulder Co., Colorado, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 3, 2006 Russet. Light-beige head dwindles into a wispy ring. Subtle aroma of anise, nougat, and chocolate glaze. Highly understated smoke. Touch of diacetyl. Soft, restrained prickles of carbonation. Thick and oily body. Gritty punch of roast is quickly deepened by a sharp roast and a tannic dryness. Tight anise notes mesh beautifully with the alcohol, which is heavily spicy, but hardly overbearing. Smoke shows lots of restraint, but with this much balance and complexity, who’s complaining? Heavily peaty and sharp with medicinal phenols, however. Fresh plummy esters supply plenty of juiciness to the otherwise dry and crunchy elements of the roast. Silky and oily milk chocolate and tar-covered licorice flavors abound the senses while a wonderfully mellow and fluffy smoked nougat expression sustains the center which enhances the silken malts. Dainty kiss of acidity and Crystal dryness embraces the multilayered malt decadence and underscores all the lush richness. Remains both chewy and dry in the finish, with a dry roasted wood and alcohol mixture linked with chocolate and caramel doused grains. Only complaint is the diacetyl in the aroma, which hides much of the enticing spectrum of malts. But the complex flavors along with the silky and oily texture more than make up for it. An outstanding version, even if smoke isn’t the key component. Thanks, egajdzis. bfeldmann (1042), Wilmington, Delaware, USA
