Commercial Description:
This is a Smoked Imperial Porter, maybe the first ever made in this style. It is brewed with British Pale, British Chocolate, British Crystal and British Peat-smoked malts. It should be chocolately with hints of smoke and alcohol throughout.

Incredibly light-bodied and acidic (seemed to be the theme of night). Very fruity with sour cherries and berry flavor mixing with a woody-ashy middle and charred aftertastes. Tobacco prominent along with a moist chocolate doughiness. Burnt and fruity sadly not a great mix.

RLB YEHA 05- courtesy of Eric. Pours a medium brown with an ok head. Lots of wierd smoke in the aroma- more medicinal like. Not enough raw- wood like smoke that I get from some other german rauchbiers. Light chocolate malts, some roast, caramel and more smoke in the end. Pretty good overall, but I like Alaskan and Stone better.

Cakelike yeast with chocolatey sweetness is offset by roasted malts and a very light smokiness. Opaque brown body with ruby highlights is topped by a nice tan-brown head that recedes to a lasting cover. Cakelike doughy sweetness up front is subsumed by roasted and peat moked malts. Chocolate sweetness is lasting in the aftertaste. Medium full body with fair carbonation is quite sticky and syrupy in texture. Sampled on tap at the brewpub with beerbuzzmontreal, egajdzis, Eyedrinkale, MartinT, Rastacouere and Yowie.

NJ, Pocono, Philly YEHa!’05. Thanks to egajdzis for providing a growler to sample and later hooking me up with a growler to take home. Dark ruddy brown body with a minimal, oily light tan head. Medium intensity peat smoked malt in the nose plus some sweet chocolate in the background. Also has notes of tobacco and toffee. Restrained sweetness and a nice blend of flavors including some great licorice character. Alcohol is amazingly well-hidden. A good, subtle smoked beer with just enough smokiness to titillate and plenty of other characters to make it a really nice beer to drink.

12.10.05 Growler from egajdzis’s personal keg, RLB YEHA - 05. Dark brown with small but lasting tan head. Aroma is a mild showcase of peat and smoke but with an unusual squash thing going on (as if someone had gutted a pumpkin right beside me while I was sniffing the beer). The squash aroma is not at all bad, just completely unexpected. Flavor is mildly roasty and plenty smoky. One of the more rustic peat smoked beers I’ve tried, this is a bit rough around the edges, but a delight overall and something I’d certainly seek out if it was ever bottled. Excellent balance, great beer. It’s a richer, less bitter, more English take on the same beer O’Fallon has made...or, at least, it’s in the same class.

Growler at Ricklikebeer’s YEHA ’05 thanks to egajdzis. Dark brown color with a small tan head. Mild roasted malt aroma with some smoke and a little chocolate. Flavor of woodsy smoke was strong on first sip, but mellowed out after that and allowed the other flavors to emerge. Dark chocolate, roasted malt, vanilla, with almost no taste of the fairly high alcohol content.

Poured dark brown with ruby highlites and a small light tan head. Sweet aroma of chocolate-covered cherries. Taste is very smoky, which seemed to cover most any other flavors and even lead to a somewhat dry cardboard finish. Just way too dominant smoke for my taste.
