Tap at Royal. Wrong taphandle, says its royal weisse, says saison on the menu. Color is translucent orange gold, though, so itís saison, and itís got a low retention eggshell head. Lightly hoppy, yeasty, lemon wheat aroma. Malty and lemony in flavor, nice ssession strength and balanc, with bitter lemon hop finish. As flavorful as some triples (I wrote that when I thought it was a wheat and I was suprised). Bubblegummy. Fairly nice, probably the best beer I had at Royal last night.

White pepper and orange blossom nose. Coriander, allspice, clove and apricot hints come thru as it warms. Becomes more citric and floral on the palate with jasmine hints. Very clean dry and spicy finish. Bottle

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle - corked and caged - courtesy of hopdog! Empties a vibrant gold, like an autumn sunset, with an eruption of foam. Very lively! The aroma instantly releases light buttery notes, wheat, light peppery hints, Belgian yeast, in-bloom flowers, light lemon meringue pie, and mild spices. Faint candyish fruits dance in the background. Taste blends lemon cheesecake, light buttered popcorn, hay bales, spices, Belgian yeast and a blossoming flowers. Light earthiness in spots and maybe a hint of perfume. Delicious! Body is light, arid and whispy, but still feels rounded and full. Finishes with light grains, lemon zest, light horseblanket, bit of earthiness, mild spices, yeast, and candied fruits. Very nice stuff! Surprisingly lower than expected ratings for this...

3.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
750 bottle. Lightly hazy, pale gold body sports an enormous, towering, pillowy head with incredible hang time. Complex spicy and yeasty aromatics with nuances of white and szechuan peppercorns, floral and barnyard notes, ginger, wheat, and clove. Flavorwise, the beer fails to impress, with subtle crisp buttery/rye cracker malt, wet slate, watermelon rind, soap, nutmeg and fresh cilantro leaves. Thin, airy, foamy palate. The long mild aftertaste is a little spicy and a lot metallic. A real letdown after that great bouquet.

What a classy brew! A tad sweet. Rich cloud of a head. Amazing body. This beer is big party, wraped in a one pint bottle. Enjoy!

3.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Rather sweet aroma has some woody and floral notes. Clear golden body is topped by a low white head that recedes to cover and coats the glass. Fairly spicy, peppery, coriander flavour with grassy, haylike hop character and light bitterness. Medium light body with lively strong carbonation. Sampled on tap at the brewpub with beerbuzzmontreal, egajdzis, Eyedrinkale, MartinT, Rastacouere and Yowie.

At Brewery. Poured a clear, but solid looking golden body with a small white head. The nose was very peppery. Flavor was bready with coriander, pepper, and clove. A shake of hops. good way to end the Summer OF Saisons.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Clear dark gold body, wearing a medium sized white head. Soapy hop/yeast carbonation appears both woody and herbal in the nose, but further studies reveal appealing candyish honey malts and underlying spices that, in mouth, take the shape of mustard seeds, coriander and sage. Developping a soft grassy bitterness, but despite full carbonation, it canít hide its insufficient attenuation and therefore wins most of its saison character from the spices. Medium bodied, foamy texture. Too bad they didnít have any of those famed bottles yet.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a clear dark gold color with a thin ring of white lace. Aroma of spices with farmhouse character. Decent barnyard flavor with spices. The body is light with a creamy texture and soft carbonation. A decent effort but it doesnít quite have the authenticity of true Belgian Saison.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: MAY 12, 2007 On tap at the brewpub:
This appears to be filtered? If so, I really donít understand why. Oranges and coriander are abundant but donít leave any room for more perfumes to show up. This will be a straightforward, spicy, and clean malt example.
Peaches and oranges trample the honeyed malt back. Low carbonation and hefty malts point to an American heritage rather than Belgian, which isnít what I was looking for in this beer. Toasted malts fall into hop bitterness, but there isnít much mop flavor to link them.
Imitating the greats is a daunting task. 3.4/5
Now this is much better. I donít know if this is all the work of bottle conditioning, but whatever. The farmhouse character is authentic, the lively carbonation fits the style, the wet haystack and fruity esters (banana bubblegum) admirably merge with the herbal, spicy hops and the yeast just works. A very good Saison, better than some Belgian examples. 3.8/5
