COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A Belgian style Saison (or Farmhouse Ale) brewed with a blend of British Pale and German Pils malt and hopped with East Kent Goldings. Fermented with a special proprietary yeast which imparts its dry, spicy character. Golden orange in color.

The Lure:
This appears to be filtered? If so, I really donít understand why. Oranges and coriander are abundant but donít leave any room for more perfumes to show up. This will be a straightforward, spicy, and clean malt example.

The Festivities:
Peaches and oranges trample the honeyed malt back. Low carbonation and hefty malts point to an American heritage rather than Belgian, which isnít what I was looking for in this beer. Toasted malts fall into hop bitterness, but there isnít much mop flavor to link them.

Transcendence:
Imitating the greats is a daunting task. 3.4/5

Bottled:
Now this is much better. I donít know if this is all the work of bottle conditioning, but whatever. The farmhouse character is authentic, the lively carbonation fits the style, the wet haystack and fruity esters (banana bubblegum) admirably merge with the herbal, spicy hops and the yeast just works. A very good Saison, better than some Belgian examples. 3.8/5

Hazy bright golden colour with a thick pillowy white head. Sweet spicy/yeasty aroma with a touch of sweatiness underneath it. Earthy and dusty. Coriander spiciness, orange peel and apple skins all make an appearance here. Spicy wheatiness that is particularly appealing. Flavour is fantastically dry with a spicy yeastiness underlying a soft flowery and wheaty flavour. A bit of lingering hop flavour makes its presence known as the temperature comes up a bit. Light lime citrus and green peppercorns all contribute to making this one of the tastiest saisons Iíve come across. Gorgeous brew.

DLD í11. Poured hazy yellowish orange with nice fluffy white head, aroma had notes of bananas and clove, some fruity esters with earth, touch of barnyard, some wood and grass notes. Taste was nice and full bodied, touch of spicy yeast with notes of grass, bananas, fruit, and some grassy noble hops in the finish, nice and dry.

Sample from a bottle. Light yellow in color and cloudy in appearance with a soft white head. Weird nose of grain and spice, a but floral, but not really peppery or exciting at all, more of a herb-like spice note. Oily texture up front, lightly drying in the back, which is nice enough, but flavor-wise it comes across perfume-heavy and green, with a distinct oily vegetable note throughout. Okay overall, but a little weird and a little too green.

[145-20061221] 750mL. Bready, yeasty alcohol aroma thatís tangy with a faint hint of band-aid. Cloudy, straw-coloured body with a big foamy white head. Flavour is tangy wheat with hoppy spice, hints of herb, citrus and ginger, and it somehow reminds me of seafood. Medium body, tangy aftertaste. Good in small quantities, has an interesting Kool-Aid-esque tang.

750 ml bottle thanks to Dan. Pours a clear golden color with a medium white head. The aroma is sweet spicy pepper and lemons. The flavor is smooth pale malts and some zesty lemon, a bit of pepper and earthy yeast. Very drinkable. Quite well made.

Bottle. Pours gold with a huge white head. Sweet aroma, a bit citric with plenty of spices. Flavor has spices and is a bit sweet and fruity. Citric, some grass and pepper, which leads to a dry finish. Nice.

UPDATED: DEC 7, 2007 Bottle. Head is initially large, frothy, white, fully lasting. Body is hazy medium yellow, bottle conditioned. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain), lightly to moderately hoppy (herbs), lightly yeasty (cobwebs, basement), with notes of pepper, lemon zest, and canned pineapple. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety texture, lively carbonation. Got 3 more bottles recently in order to get more closely acquainted with this one. The aroma has been consistently a little less solid than my first try a few years ago, but itís still overall one of the better saisons made in the US. Patterned after Saison Dupont for sure.
