Growler from the brewpub: Poured a dark black color with a fair head. The aroma was slightly smokey. The flavor was burnt malts, smokey notes, and a slight metallic taste. Overall, a smooth drinking Schwarz.

[1878-20081205] Cask. Not much aroma, some grass. Dark brown red-hued body with a medium-lasting creamy light tan head. Beery grains flavour has some toasted fruit skins and baked beans. Medium-full body. Punchy, fair.

Sly Fox’s offering of the schwarzbier style is better than most. The style itself is quite uninteresting and bland, but the Fox brewed it quite well. It still doesn’t score all that great, because of the style itself. The body contained a lot more maltiness and flavor than most, and the finish was quite malty and sweet. At least this interpetation was palateable and a little enjoyable.

2008-12-05. Very dark brown-black body with a good sized brown head that fades. Mild aroma of dark malts. (6+) Mild roast bitterness in the flavour over an oddly tangy caramel malt profile that wavers between lovely and distracting. (6+) Brief note of baked beans seems unlikely. Perhaps it came from the surrounding bar? Average palate. On tap at Goodbar, Buffalo

Draft at R-ford. Pours dark brown with off-tan head that dissipates quickly. Nose is roasty dark malt, mild dark chocolate, hazelnut. Tastes malty, with dark chocolate, an overall roasty flavor and palate, and a solid nutty bill. Medium to light in palate, this one would improve with a higher specific gravity.

On tap at the Royersford location. Pours a deep brown with deep amber notes when held to the light and a smaller creamy tan head that left some lacing. Aroma of deep roasted malt, chocolate, lightly smokey and nutty. Flavor of roasted Cheerios, light smoke, roasted malt, hop bitterness just right to help balance the beer.
