Donít be deceived. This bubbly brew may seem demure, but it packs a solid punch. We put our own twist on this one, a Belgian-style golden ale, packing it full of Sorachi Ace hops, which lend lemon undertones. Youíll also note pepper and a subtle sweetness as this beer washes over your tongue, finishing dry with a light hop flavor. Bedeviled seems unassuming with itís pale golden tint and smooth taste. But that belies itís more devilish side, an ABV of 8.4%. We dubbed this beer Bedeviled in honor of the Neikirkís pet, Duvel, an ornery trickster of a dog who was named for the overlord of this beer style.

Draft at the brewery. An amber-colored beer with a definite candied sugar character, maybe a bit smoky even. I donít get any lemon or pepper at all. (#5388, 12/7/2013)

From the tap poured a golden color with a fair amount of head. Sweet malty flavor with a quick finish.

Smartmouth are locals of mine, just across the water in Norfolk VA. They really have mastered the craft of saisons, Belgians, IPAs and more. The Bedeviled is a great example of a fine American rendition of a Belgian strong. Enjoy one if in town

Draft at Smartmouth. Cloudy gold with a short white head. Aroma is lemony with hints of tropical fruit, grassy notes, spices and grains. Taste ups the lemony and peppery notes from the Sorachi Ace hops and adds toasted malt, light tropical fruit notes, floral notes, grains, light grass, dusty yeast and sweet malt. Body is medium with a strong, prickly carbonation. Ends with more peppery notes, soft spice, dusty yeast, lemon, grassy hops, floral hops, sweet malt, grains and faint tropical fruit. Nice!
